CROWDS UP AS CURTAIN COMES DOWN ON TEES VALLEY RACECOURSE’S 2009 RACING SEASON

Sunday 15 November 2009

REDCAR Racecourse rounded off its 2009 Flat racing season in good heart. Despite the most challenging economic climate for almost 20 years, a marginally increased average attendance figure on a like-for-like basis over 2008 pleased the racecourse executive.

General manager Amy Fair said: “The racecourse got off to a cracking start with an enormous crowd on Easter Monday and – though we have been unlucky with the weather on more days than I wish to count – we have been welcoming very healthy numbers of visitors since then.

“The average attendances are up one per cent when comparing corresponding fixtures which, under the current economic circumstances in this part of the country, shows that people really do want to keep coming to the horse races.

“The racing highlight of the year was the victory in May of The Queen’s horse Kingdom Of Fife in the Zetland Gold Cup which really thrilled everyone who was with us that day.”

Although Punters Packages have not been as popular this year, which probably reflects the job losses that the Tees Valley area has suffered, the new Garden Party and BBQ packages have sold well and often been bought by people who are new to horse racing.

The racecourse’s top trainer and jockey awards for the season were made to Richard Fahey and Tony Hamilton respectively.

Though there is no more horse racing until Easter, the racecourse will continue to be busy.

The facilities are hired out for events and conferences, while there are four Christmas parties this year on Friday 11 and 18 and Saturday 12 and 19 December – at a cost of £27.95 per person. Find out more about our Christmas Parties

Annual admission badges for 2010 are already on sale at £135 which, with admission to all 19 fixtures at the racecourse, admission to 30 meetings at other racecourses, and ten days watching Yorkshire cricket, make an ideal Christmas present.  Find out more about our Annual Badge Scheme for 2010.
