Easter racing marks 50th birthday for grandstand

Wednesday 16 April 2014

The traditional Easter Monday horse racing fixture at Redcar Racecourse is set to be a special day.

The day marks half a century since the racecourse’s grandstand – the Petch Stand – was opened.

It was officially opened by the father of the current racecourse Chairman Lord Zetland on Easter Monday 1964 and is named after Major Leslie Petch who was racecourse manager from the end of the Second World War for 26 years until 1971.

The racecourse is anticipating a sizeable crowd at one of its most popular racing days of the year.

A quarter of Britain’s racecourses are holding meetings between Good Friday and Easter Monday.

The good news for local people seeking an affordable day out over Easter is that Redcar Racecourse – with adult admission from just £5 and accompanied children allowed in free of charge – is the least expensive in Britain.

Admission prices have been frozen in 2014 for the seventh successive season.

General Manager Amy Fair said: “We have continued to invest in our facilities, so our attendances have held up very well indeed.

“We are thrilled to be able to say that we offer the most affordable day’s racing in Britain where charges are made.

“We’re providing a family day out on all our bigger racing days for £10 for two adults and accompanied children aged 17 and under.”

Easter Monday is the first of a series of attractive feature racing days between now and the autumn. Among the other highlights coming up are:

Redcar’s course enclosure – which offers a café, bar and picnic area – costs just £5 for adults and £4 for students and pensioners. The Grandstand enclosure is £15 admission on Easter Monday and other big meetings.

Gates open on Easter Monday at noon. The first race is at 2.10pm. The finale is at 5.40pm. There will be free family entertainment, including the Easter bunny, Alice in Wonderland and the Mad Hatter.

There are also bouncy castles, an Easter treasure hunt, an Easter bonnet parade, face painting and stilt walking.

Early arrivals receive a free mini-Easter egg.

Local performing arts company Page2Start is helping to deliver the fun-filled day.
