Five Minutes of Fame Caroline Smith, Sales and Marketing Assistant

Wednesday 6 April 2016

In the first of our "Five Minutes of Fame" interviews we chat to Caroline Smith, Sales and Marketing Assistant at Redcar Racecourse.

When did you start working at Redcar Racecourse?

Monday 23rd August 2010

Which is your favourite Premier Meeting and why?

Caribbean Carnival Day – It is a busy day but really relaxed and fun. I love seeing the colourful and bizarre outfits that people turn up in for our competitions! I admire people’s creativity.

Chocolate or cheese?

Chocolate, I love it.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

On various weekends throughout January to May I love going to the point to points that are held in Yorkshire. It is a really good day, made even better if my horse wins or my brother Richard rides a winner!  Otherwise I love going for a nice walk with my partner, Phill. Normally this is finished off nicely with a cup of tea and a scone!

If you are marooned on a desert island what would you take?

A good book.

Countryside or City?

I am a farmer’s daughter so definitely the countryside.

Favourite holiday destination?

Italy.

What are your pet hates?

Cats, loud bangs, and small car park spaces.

Favourite drink?

Prosecco.

Biggest achievement?

I ran the Great North Run in 2013 in memory of my Mum who sadly lost her battle with cancer in 2012. We raised approximately £4000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. It was a brilliant day as my brother Richard, cousin Royce and Aunty Sue also took part.

Why do you enjoy working at Redcar Racecourse?

Two days are never the same here! It is a unique place to work and I would like to think that we are an integral part of the community. It is great when people compliment on even the smallest of changes. We are here for people’s enjoyment and it is rewarding when you can see our customers both new and regular having a good time.

Who is your racing hero?

My Grandad, Denys Smith. He was a self taught trainer who had a very successful training career. The highlight of his career was training Red Alligator to victory in the 1968 Grand National. He still enjoys going to his local racecourses Catterick and Sedgefield at the grand old age of 91. He says Redcar is too far for him these days!
