Is horse racing the most affordable sporting family day out?

Tuesday 19 May 2009

Redcar Racecourse certainly thinks so. The Tees Valley racecourse is targeting families as never before, evidenced by a crowd of more than 7,000 spectators on Easter Monday. And, as the next Bank Holiday fixture approaches on Monday (25 MAY), we've compared the cost for a family going horse racing against other sporting attractions in the region.

We’ve found that for mum, dad and two children:

v      Premiership football costs £76;
v      League football costs £40;
v      Cricket costs £34;
v      Motoring racing costs £20;
v      But horse racing at Redcar Racecourse costs just £10.

The racecourse’s general manager Amy Fair said: “There is no question that, with accompanied under 16s always being admitted free of charge, horse racing is a fantastically affordable day out for families.

“On days like the Zetland Gold Cup day on next week’s Bank Holiday, we lay on entertainment for children and families to keep everyone happy in between the horse races.

“£5 adult admission into our Course Enclosure – and it’s less on regular days and less still for senior citizens – must be one of the best value sporting days out anywhere. And that’s on-the-day purchase – there’s no extra cost for not buying in advance.

“We keep our food and drink prices very competitive too, and there are discount vouchers to download from our website to save even more money.”

Lots of family entertainments are being laid on for the Bank Holiday, including bouncy castles, a clown, jazz band and face painters.

The two-day horse racing meeting on Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 May also coincides with the school half-term holidays. On the opening day, the showpiece event of the spring at the Tees Valley racecourse will be run – the £50,000 Totesuper7 Zetland Gold Cup.

The highlights for the rest of the year at Redcar Racecourse include:

v      Saturday 20 June – Ladies’ Day;
v      Thursday 2 July – Irish Night;
v      Sunday 19 July – Family Fun Day;
v      Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 August - Summer Weekend – Caribbean Carnival and School’s Out respectively;
v      Saturday 29 August - Party Night with Commitments concert after racing;
v      Saturday 3 October – Seasonal finale with the Two Year Old Trophy, Listed Guisborough Stakes and the final of the Boddingtons Straight Mile Championship Series.

The first race of six on Monday 25 May is scheduled for 2.10pm, with admission gates open from midday. The finale is at 5.05pm. On Tuesday 26 May, the first race of seven is once again at 2.10pm, with the last at 5.10pm.
