IT’S ZETLAND GOLD CUP BANK HOLIDAY RACEDAY

REDCAR Racecourse is throwing open its gates next Monday (30 MAY) to welcome what it hopes will be a bumper Bank Holiday crowd. The two-day horse racing meeting on Monday and Tuesday coincides with the school half-term holidays.

On the opening day, the showpiece event of the spring at the Tees Valley racecourse will be run – the Totepool Zetland Gold Cup.

Two years ago, the race was won by My Kingdom of Fife, owned by The Queen and ridden by the champion jockey Ryan Moore.

The one and a quarter mile Class 2 race, which has been run at Redcar Racecourse since shortly after the end of the Second World War, will attract plenty of good horses for spectators to watch.

Lots of family entertainment are being laid on too, including bouncy castles, slides, a jazz band and face painters.

The racecourse’s general manager Amy Fair said: “We’re very much looking forward to welcoming a big crowd to our bank holiday racing on Monday 30 May.

“As well as our regular visitors, it’s a splendid opportunity for people who maybe haven’t been racing before to try out the sport for the first time. The entertainment is tremendous value for families seeking an affordable afternoon out when, as always, accompanied under 16s are admitted free of charge.”

The highlights for the rest of the season at Redcar Racecourse include:

Saturday 18 June – Ladies’ Day;
Sunday 17 July – Helps For Heroes Family Fun Day;
Saturday 6 August - Caribbean Carnival day;
Saturday 27 August – Ladies’ and Gents’ Evening;
Saturday 1 October – Tote Two Year Old Trophy Day - Seasonal climax with the £150,000 Tote Two Year Old Trophy, the Listed Guisborough Stakes and the final of the John Smith’s Straight Mile Championship Series.

The first race of six on Monday 30 May is scheduled for 2.25pm, with admission gates open from midday. The finale is at 5.20pm. On Tuesday 31 May, the first race of seven is at 2.30pm, with the last at 5.30pm.
