ITíS ZETLAND GOLD CUP THIS BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY

Wednesday 22 May 2013

REDCAR Racecourse is throwing open its gates on Monday 27th MAY to welcome what it expects will be a bumper Bank Holiday crowd.

The two-day horse racing meeting on Monday and Tuesday coincides with the school half-term holidays.

All accompanied under 16s get into the racecourse free of charge – and for adults it’s just as little as £5 on Monday and £4 on Tuesday.

On the opening day, the showpiece event of the spring at the Tees Valley racecourse will be run – the Zetland Gold Cup. In the past, the race has been won by a horse owned by The Queen.

The one and a quarter mile race, which has been run at Redcar Racecourse since shortly after the end of the Second World War, will attract plenty of good horses for spectators to watch.

Newmarket-trained horses have done well in this race in recent years; last year’s winner, Danadana, trained by Luca Cumani and ridden by former champion jockey, Kieren Fallon won a Group 3 race this month at Chester.

Lots of family entertainment is being laid on too, including bouncy castles, slides and face painters.

The racecourse’s general manager Amy Fair said: “We’re very much looking forward to welcoming a big crowd to our bank holiday racing on Monday 27 May.

“As well as our regular visitors, it’s a splendid opportunity for people who maybe haven’t been racing before to try out the sport for the first time. The entertainment is tremendous value for families seeking an affordable afternoon out when, as always, accompanied under 16s are admitted free of charge.”

Redcar’s ‘Course Enclosure’ – which offers a café, bar and picnic area – costs just £5 for adults and £4 for students and pensioners on Monday. On the second day of the meeting, on Tuesday 28 May, the prices are £1 less. The Grandstand Enclosure is £15 admission on Monday and other big meetings – and £12 on Tuesday.

Gates open on Bank Holiday Monday at 12 noon. The first race is at 2.20pm. The finale is at 5.05pm. On Tuesday, racing is between 2.10pm and 5.10pm.
