THE Jolly Roger was hoisted high above Redcar Racecourse today as the track celebrated its seventh annual Caribbean Carnival.

Seven races drew a good crowd to the racetrack, and fairground rides, bouncy castles, and live Caribbean music from North Tyneside Steel Band provided plenty of entertainment.

Dozens of racegoers also joined in the fun, turning-up in Caribbean costumes, determined to win booty in the fancy dress competitions.

In the Children’s Fancy Dress Competition, first place was deservedly won by six year-old pirate Olivia Nurse from Wynyard. Olivia was delighted, and thanked mum Melanie for help with her costume, and her Auntie Kerry for doing her pirate make-up.

Logan Kermode, three, from Middlesbrough was second, and last year's winner Jamie Black, from Cumbria, third.

To no-one’s surprise, the grown-ups took things very seriously, and competition was fierce. Top prize went to Claire Barnes, Andrew Lodge, Darren Fields and Paul Edwards, all from Middlesbrough, who came dressed as the Jamaican Bobsled Team.

The team were thrilled with their win, and surprised the judges when they revealed that they didn’t all even know each other!

“It was complete coincidence!” said Claire, “I came as a Jamaican bobsledder for my mate’s hen do, and we just ran into these guys who were also dressed in the Jamaican colours! We had a good laugh, but then we realised we might stand a better chance if we joined forces, and it worked!”

Second prize went to Davey Yates, from Sunderland, for his Captain Hook look, while Nicola Bourne, from Middlesbrough, was third.

General Manager Amy Fair said: “The Caribbean Carnival is one of our favourite events of the year, and just looking at how people have joined in the fun and really dived into the spirit of the day, it’s not hard to see why.Thank you to everyone who helped make this such a special and enjoyable day.”
