QUICK GUIDE TO A DAY AT REDCAR RACES

Friday 27 March 2009

HORSE racing has rarely been more popular since the 1950s, with almost six million people visiting Britain’s racecourses every year. It makes horse racing the second most popular spectator sport after football. The Tees Valley racecourse at Redcar is playing its part in this era of success.

With many of its spring and summer fixtures being at weekends and on public holidays, the racecourse makes an excellent family day out, especially as accompanied children under 16 are always admitted free.

So, what should first time or inexperienced visitors know when they go racing?

Parking and admission: Parking is free. Grandstand £15 (£12 on regular days); Course Enclosure £5 (£4 on regular days). Accompanied children 16 always admitted free of charge. Seniors: £9 Grandstand (£8 regular days) and £3.50 Course Enclosure (£2.50 regular days).

Which enclosure?: The ‘Grandstand’ offers the best views – there is no better place from which to watch the racing. It includes superb bars and dining options such as the Crows’ Nest Restaurant. Redcar’s ‘Course Enclosure’ is one of the most affordable places to watch horse racing anywhere in Britain. Situated in the centre of the track with its own cafe and bar, the Course Enclosure also provides entertainment on selected days. Picnics are very welcome in the Course Enclosure.

What to wear: Forget Royal Ascot! Redcar Races is relaxed. There are no barriers and no dress code so everyone can go where they like and dress how they want.

Racing programme: The official programme is invaluable. The silks worn by the jockeys are displayed in colour. The programme shows the recent record of each horse running, the weight the horse will carry in the race, and the name of the jockey and trainer.

Betting: You can put your money on with the bookmakers who stand in front of the grandstands or with the Tote. You ‘take a price’ with a bookmaker at the time when you put your money on, whereas with the Tote the bet goes into a pool, with the winnings decided after the race.

Making your selection: You can watch the horses in both the pre-parade ring, where the horses are saddled, and the parade ring itself. Read the form – or just choose your favourite jockey or a horse whose name you like or whose rider is wearing your favourite colour! After all, it’s just a bit of fun.

The races: Now watch the races from the grandstands and cheer the winners as they come back into the winner’s enclosure.

A full list of fixtures can be viewed on the fixtures page. There are generous discounts for groups of visitors.
