RACING WELFARE DAY AT REDCAR ON MONDAY

Wednesday 9 May 2012

Redcar stages a seven-race programme on Monday (May 14) – Racing Welfare Day - when racing is scheduled to begin at 2-00 p.m. It’s a day which launches ‘Barney’s Challenge’.

Six races are sponsored by supporters of the charity Racing Welfare, in particular the efforts of Paul ‘Barney’ Bamford who sets of from Redcar during the afternoon in his specially-adapted hand cycle to travel the length of Yorkshire to raise funds for the charity which represents stud and stable staff in the UK who have been injured. Barney will arrive at Doncaster’s evening meeting five days’ later (Saturday, May 19), stopping off at York’s Dante Festival during the week. He will cover some 110 miles and hopes to raise over £100,000 for Racing Welfare.

Racing Welfare has helped Barney since he was paralysed from the chest down after being injured in Spain when assistant trainer to former Yorkshire-based trainer, Les Eyre. The money raised during ‘Barney’s Challenge’ will go directly to Racing Welfare’s Accidents and Injuries Fund, along with a 10% donation to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Three-year-olds take part in the third qualifying race in The John Smith’s Redcar Straight-Mile Championship Series, a popular handicap series at the seaside racecourse which culminates in a Final on Saturday, October 6. Wolf Spirit (trained at Stillington near York by Ruth Carr) and Abidhabidubai (trained at Malton by John Quinn) are the respective winners of the two previous qualifying races so far this term.

The giant screen, situated opposite the main stands, will enable racegoers to see even more action on the track.
