Friday 22 March 2013

EASTER is one of the most popular times of the year for people to go horse racing and the racecourse offering the most affordable day out in the whole of Britain is Redcar.

Over a fifth of the country’s tracks are holding meetings between Easter Saturday and Easter Monday.  With adult admission from just £5 and accompanied under 16s allowed in free of charge, it is the Tees Valley racecourse that’s giving the best value.

On-the-day adult admission at the other 12 racecourses holding fixtures over Easter ranges from £8 to £21 in their cheapest enclosures.

Easter Monday is the first of 18 fixtures in 2013 at Redcar Racecourse and the start of the Flat racing season.

Redcar Racecourse’s General Manager Amy Fair said: “We are absolutely delighted to be launching our 2013 racing season on Easter Monday.  Horse racing over Easter is really popular and we’re looking forward to a big Bank Holiday crowd.

“It’s no secret that Tees Valley faces severe economic challenges and, as a result, at our racecourse we haven’t increased general admission prices for six years.

“However, we have continued to invest in our facilities, so our attendances have held up very well indeed.  With the exception of racecourses that occasionally give free admission on quiet days, we are thrilled to be able to say that we offer the more affordable day’s racing in Britain.  We’re providing a family day out on all our racing days for £10 or under for two adults and accompanied children aged under 16.”

Redcar’s ‘Course Enclosure’ – which offers a café, bar and picnic area – costs just £5 for adults and £4 for students and pensioners on big days. On regular days, the prices are £1 less.  The Grandstand Enclosure is £15 admission on Easter Monday and other big meetings – and £12 on regular days.

Gates open on Easter Monday – 1 April – at 12 noon.  The first race is at 2.30pm.  The finale, at 5.30pm, is the Redcar Racecourse Grand National Trial, raced over five furlongs and restricted to three-year-old horses.

There will be free family entertainment, including bouncy castles, face painting, balloon modelling and a magician.  Early arrivals receive a free mini-Easter egg.

Among the highlights for 2013 after Easter Monday are:

v  Bank Holiday Monday 27 May – Zetland Gold Cup day;

v  Saturday 22 June – Ladies’ Day;

v  Sunday 21 July – Helps For Heroes Family Fun Day;

v  Saturday 10 August - Caribbean Carnival day;

v Saturday 24 August – Ladies’ and Gents’ Evening;

v  Saturday 5 October – Seasonal climax with the £150,000 Two Year Old Trophy, the Listed Guisborough Stakes and the final of the Straight Mile Championship Series.
