Redcar Racecourse Helps Set Healthier Goals

Friday 21 January 2011

Redcar Racecourse and Middlesbrough Football Club have teamed up with the Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland Community Services (MRCCS) Health Improvement Service to help promote and support healthier lifestyles for local communities.

Middlesbrough Football Club’s ‘In the Community’ service and Redcar Racecourse have kindly given MRCCS permission to use their facilities for various activities and health walks.

On the first Thursday of every month, in partnership with Middlesbrough FC, MRCCS are delivering a Men’s Health Drop In at the Riverside Stadium.  Any men aged 16 years or above are welcome to come along between 5.00pm - 8.30pm to take the opportunity to improve their health and lifestyle.
You can choose from any or all of the following services we offer – all are completely free of charge:
  • Physical Activity – join us for a 30-minute brisk health walk down the tunnel then around the Riverside pitch and stadium concourse. If you’re up to it you have the opportunity to climb the terrace steps in all 4 corners of the ground!
  • You can also take part in boxercise or beat the highest scores on exercises on the Nintendo Wii Fit!
  • Weight MANagement – join the group in a hospitality box overlooking the stadium and pitch for advice and support to lose weight and eat healthy.
  • Healthy Heart Check – CVD screening for the over 40’s.
  • BP checks and general health information.
  • Stop Smoking Service – let us help you quit smoking.
  • You can even have your photograph taken and watch us age you on an interactive digital ageing software programme depending on the lifestyle you wish to choose for your future!
At each session there is also a free draw for all participants to win two Boro home match tickets.
Redcar Racecourse is kindly allowing MRCCS to use their track and facilities for Health Walks.
The walks are open to everyone – people of all ages and abilities are welcome. The walks last approximately one hour and include a full circuit of the track - beginners can do a shorter walk. The walks will be on the flat but underfoot conditions may occasionally be wet depending on the weather. No special equipment is needed – just comfortable walking shoes or trainers.
The walks will be held on certain midweek days at 10.30am - for more details of dates call the Health Improvement Service on 01642 777845 and MRCCS will send you a leaflet. You can also take the opportunity if you wish to have free training as a Volunteer Walk Leader.
Some of the benefits of Health Walks are:
  • Improves your general fitness. Walking for just 30 minutes a day 5 days per week can significantly increase your general fitness.
  • Makes you feel good, gives you more energy, reduces stress and helps you sleep better.
  • Walking keeps your heart ‘strong’ and helps reduce blood pressure.
  • Walking, along with a healthy diet, helps you lose weight.
  • Socialise and meet new friends
Amy Fair, Redcar Racecourse Manager says:  “We’re very keen to help as much as we can to improve the health and lifestyle of our local communities.  We are sure people will enjoy walking around the race track – it’s flat, safe and traffic free and people will enjoy the fresh air.  We are looking forward to seeing members of the public getting involved with the Health Walks initiative and using our facilities for organised walks leading to a healthy lifestyle!”
Don Burluraux, Health Walks Co-ordinator for MRCCS, added: “Come along and join in any of the above activities – it’s good fun, healthy and it might change your life!”
For more information about either scheme, call the Health Improvement Service on: 01642 777845
