Redcar Racecourse stages Britain's top Bank Holiday Horse Race

Monday 18 May 2009

The grandstands were packed with families on Easter Monday; and now Redcar Racecourse is opening its gates again for another bumper bank holiday fixture. The two-day horse racing meeting on Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 May also coincides with the school half-term holidays.

On the opening day, the showpiece event of the spring at the Tees Valley racecourse will be run – the £50,000 Totesuper7 Zetland Gold Cup.

It is the most valuable horse race anywhere in Britain on the Bank Holiday. The one and a quarter mile Class 2 race, which has been run at Redcar Racecourse since shortly after the end of the Second World War, will attract plenty of good horses for spectators to watch.

Lots of family entertainment are being laid on too, including bouncy castles, a clown, jazz band and face painters.

The racecourse’s general manager Amy Fair said: “Easter Monday was a fantastic start to our Flat racing season. Now we’re looking forward to welcoming another big crowd to our next bank holiday racing on Monday 25 May.

“As well as our regular visitors, it’s a splendid opportunity for people who maybe haven’t been racing before to try out the sport for the first time. The entertainment is tremendous value for families seeking an affordable day afternoon out when, as always, accompanied under 16s are admitted free of charge.”

With a total prize fund of £50,000 The totesuper7 Zetland Gold Cup is a famous Heritage Handicap over one mile and a quarter, which is set to attract a quality turn-out of top middle-distance horses. Last year’s winner, Capable Guest was trained by the former England footballer-turned trainer, Mick Channon. Recent winners include Flipando, Chantaco, Blue Monday, Blue Spinnaker, Hazim, Flight Sequence and The Whistling Teal.

Also on Bank Holiday Monday, regular sponsors Market Cross Jewellers, who have branches throughout the region, support a handicap contest for maidens over the staying distance of one mile and three-quarters. The toteswinger Handicap Stakes, a £10,000 race for three-year-olds over one mile and a quarter is also featured on the opening day

The action on Tuesday (May 26) begins with a race for maiden two-year-old fillies supported by The European Breeders’ Fund. A couple of the seven races on Tuesday are sponsored by Weatherbys of Wellingborough, a company which provides administrative and commercial services to the racing industry. The Anderson Barrowcliff Handicap Stakes, a contest for three-year-old sprinters over six furlongs, is supported by one of the region’s largest firms of chartered accountants, financial and business advisers. Based at Thornaby, Anderson Barrowcliff are the racecourse’s accountants and have sponsored at Redcar since 1991.

The first race of six on Monday 25 May is scheduled for 2.10pm, with admission gates open from midday. The finale is at 5.05pm. On Tuesday 26 May, the first race of seven is once again at 2.10pm, with the last at 5.10pm.
