REDCAR RACECOURSE UNDER STARTER’S ORDERS FOR THE 2010 FLAT RACING SEASON

Tuesday 16 March 2010

THE starting stalls are about to fly open at Redcar Racecourse for the first time in 2010. The Tees Valley racecourse has an exciting schedule of 19 racing fixtures between Easter Monday – 5 April - and the seasonal finale in October.

With almost half of the meetings at weekends, in the evening or on public holidays, there is plenty of choice for seasoned racegoers and once-a-year visitors alike.

Over the winter, the racecourse’s facilities have been spruced up with spending of £70,000, and a new bar has been built inside the grandstand.

The racecourse’s general manager Amy Fair said: “Easter Monday always gets the racing season at Redcar Racecourse off with a bang. We attracted a cracking crowd 12 months ago, and we’re looking forward to welcoming people back again for our traditional opening fixture of the year.

“As well as our regular visitors, it’s a splendid opportunity for people who maybe haven’t been racing before to try out the sport for the first time over the Easter holidays.

“Our visitors on Easter Monday will also have the chance to win a prize by taking part in a competition to name the racecourse’s new bar.

The most popular fixtures are retained, including Zetland Gold Cup day and Ladies’ Day. New for 2010 is a Lads’ Night on 1 July which will feature a ‘Challenge darts player Bobby George’ competition, a fun casino and a best dressed man contest with prizes from Psyche. Also new is Marske Hall family fun day in August.

Market Cross and Chic Hats will be providing the prizes on Ladies’ Day and young Middlesbrough designer Kate Fearnley will be offering advice to the ladies on “what to wear at the races”.

Channel 4 Racing visits the racecourse on no fewer than three occasions – Ladies’ Day in June, Caribbean Carnival day in August, and the climax in October.

The highlights of the 2010 racing season include:

  • Easter Monday 5 April – Bank Holiday racing and the launch of the season-long £100,000 John Smith’s Straight Mile Championship Series;
  • Whit Monday 31 May - £35,000 Zetland Gold Cup day;
  • Saturday 19 June – Ladies’ Day;
  • Thursday 1 July – Lads’ Night;
  • Sunday 18 July – Family Fun Day;
  • Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 August - Summer Weekend – Caribbean Carnival and Marske Hall Family Fun Day respectively;
  • Saturday 28 August - Party Night;
  • Saturday 2 October – Seasonal climax with the £150,000 Tote Two Year Old Trophy, £40,000 Listed Guisborough Stakes and the final of the £100,000 John Smith’s Straight Mile Championship Series.

The first race of seven on Monday 5 April is scheduled for 2pm, with admission gates open from midday. The finale is at 5.30pm.
