Spencer heads back to Redcar - for one ride

Monday 29 May 2017

FORMER champion jockey Jamie Spencer made a journey to Redcar pay off at the start of the month and he’s back at the seaside track for just one eye-catching ride on Tuesday (May 30).

Spencer (pictured) was in the winner’s enclosure on May 4 on board George Scott’s Gilgamesh and he’s come up again to ride another Newmarket raider in the form of Near Kettering for Luca Cumani in the Racing UK HD On Sky432 Media Auction Stakes at 3.30pm.

The Medicean colt was a promising fourth of 13 in a Windsor maiden three weeks ago and will be strongly fancied to follow up at Redcar over 1m 2f.

He looks to have Mick Channon’s Pattie to beat, although it's well worth watching the market to assess the chances of Andrew Balding’s debutant Count Simon, who makes the long journey from Kingsclere, near Newbury.
Paul Hanagan was victorious in the Zetland Gold Cup on Monday thanks to a highly impressive performance from James Bethell’s Royal Ascot-bound Briardale (pictured). The former champion jockey may well follow up in Tuesday’s opener on board Richard Fahey’s likely looking debutant Dance Diva.

Again, the market is well worth watching with Tom Dascombe sending up Miss DD to open her account while Mark Johnston gives a first outing to Miss Van Winkle.

Excitement is building about the chances of Johnston’s Permian in the Epsom Derby on Saturday and the bang in form Middleham maestro (pictured) has every chance of taking Redcar’s second race with Nothing Compares who was a good third in a Beverley handicap two weeks ago.

Cabal was noted running on in third when coming up against another Mark Johnston hotpot in runaway winner Khamarry at Redcar eight days ago. There's nothing of Khamarry’s class in the third race of the day and Geoff Harker’s veteran course winner could end a long losing streak.
Our Place in Loule, trained by Noel Wilson, was well backed at his home track of Thirsk when fourth in a big field 17 days ago, and is fancied to take the last race, with the assistance of top amateur Serena Brotherton in the saddle.
