REDCAR Racecourse, which lost its Family Funday to heavy rain this month, will host a “Save Our Steel” Family Day on Sunday 9 August.

To make up for the disappointment of the lost fixture, the price of Grandstand tickets bought in advance - both online and at the racecourse – has been halved from £15 to £7.50.

As the battle to save thousands of jobs in steel and other industries in and around Redcar continues, the racecourse is running a “Save Our Steel” horse race during the afternoon.
Amy Fair, General Manager of Redcar Racecourse, said: “Being new to the area, I have been struck by the passion that there is in this community and the great coming together there has been in support of not only the steel workers but also those people whose jobs in other industries are under threat too.
“We are a local racecourse for local people, and we want to show our support by offering a reduction in the cost of a day out at the races. I also hope it makes up for the loss of our Family Funday fixture on Sunday 19 July which was a great disappointment to everyone.”
To take advantage of the half-price Grandstand admission offer, tickets need to be bought in advance at the racecourse or online quoting the code ‘SOS’. Discount vouchers for racecourse food can also be downloaded from the website.
The ‘Save Our Steel’ horse racing initiative delighted the local council.
Councillor George Dunning said: “As leader of Redcar & Cleveland Council I would urge everyone to support the initiative of Redcar Racecourse - another jewel in our local heritage crown - in holding this event to Save Our Steel here in Redcar on Tees Valley.”
Sunday 9 August is the second of a two-day weekend meeting. As always, youngsters aged under 16 are given free admission when accompanied by an adult.
There will be lots of entertainment for children during the afternoon, including the chance to dress up as a jockey and ride a race finish on a horse simulator.
Saturday is Caribbean Carnival day when children and adults alike can enter the Caribbean Carnival Competition by dressing up in their pirate outfit or grass skirt. There will be the opportunity for adults to sample calypso cocktails and for everyone to dance to the rhythms of a steel band during the day.
After August’s two-day meeting, the highlights for the rest of the year at Redcar Racecourse include:
  • Saturday 29 August - Party Night with Commitments concert after racing;
  • Saturday 3 October – Seasonal finale with the Two Year Old Trophy, Listed Guisborough Stakes and the final of the Boddingtons Straight Mile Championship Series.
The first race on Saturday 8 August is at 2.05pm, while on Sunday it’s five minutes later at 2.10pm. Entrance gates open at 12 noon on both days.
