THE EYES OF THE HORSE RACING WORLD FOCUS ON REDCAR RACECOURSE

Saturday 26 September 2009

REDCAR Racecourse stages its most important horse racing occasion of the year on Saturday (3 OCTOBER) when just under a quarter of a million pounds will be won.

The eyes of the racing world will be focussed on the Tees Valley racecourse – and the cameras of Channel 4 will be present – for one of the most eagerly awaited races for the youngest racehorses in Britain and Ireland.

The Totepool Two-Year-Old Trophy, raced over threequarters of a mile, attracts entries from hundreds of horses. But only 23 can take part.

The race, for two-year-old colts and fillies, is worth no less than £150,000, and the prize is much sought after by racehorse owners and trainers on both sides of the Irish Sea.

A horse that could run in the race and be a talking point is called Secret Millionaire, so named by his owner, property developer Rob Lloyd, when he appeared in the famous Channel 4 show of the same name earlier this year.

As well as that feature race, there is the fifth running of the Boddingtons Redcar Straight-Mile Championship Final for which horses have been racing to qualify during the spring and summer.

Completing a trio of top class races, there is the historic Guisborough Stakes, which is worth £40,000 in prize-money.

Redcar Racecourse’s general manager Amy Fair said: “This is the day in the year when we really come under the spotlight from the horse racing industry.

“We are delighted, as always, to welcome Channel 4 to our racecourse, which means that we will be seen by more than one million viewers across the country.”

On Saturday 3 October, there are seven horse races between 2.20pm and 5.40pm.

After Saturday, the final fixture of 2009 at Redcar Racecourse is on Friday afternoon, 16 October.

General admission

Entrance gates open at 12.20pm. Grandstand £15; Course Enclosure £5. Accompanied children 16 always admitted free of charge. Seniors - £9 Grandstand and £3.50 Course Enclosure.
