Diamond can sparkle again for Dods at Redcar
25/08/22

MICHAEL Dods has made no secret of the fact that Diamondonthehill has “a real engine” when he decides to put in the effort – and he can sparkle again at Redcar on Saturday.

The Al Kazeem gelding bounced back to form at the seaside track two runs ago when mastering Tim Easterby’s Redcar specialist Give It Some Teddy (see main picture).

Since then, he’s run another solid race to be beaten a head when giving David Barron’s progressive Grigadale five pounds at Thirsk.

Although Diamondonthehill is perfectly capable of having an off-day, he’s clearly in good heart and can defy a rise in the weights to land a third Redcar win under Connor Beasley in the Racing TV Straight Mile Series Handicap.

Dods could strike again later on the card when Circoloco aims to break her maiden in the Ian and Pat Swales Golden Wedding Handicap. The filly had every chance before fading close home over seven furlongs at Redcar last month and, dropping back to six, can make bottom weight tell with Connor Beasley providing strong assistance.

The Market Cross Jewellers Handicap is a tricky five-runner affair but Arrange, trained in Cumbria by Martin Todhunter, won by more than seven lengths over a mile and a half at Musselburgh last time. The extra couple of furlongs shouldn’t be a problem and Paul Mulrennan can steer the filly to back-to-back wins despite going up 10lbs.

The eight-race card on Gin and Gents Evening gets underway at 4.05pm with the Every Race Live On Racing TV Handicap. Cianciana, trained in North Yorkshire by Brian Ellison, hit a career best mark when winning at Newcastle a week ago and can give seven-pounds claimer Kayleigh Rayner her first victory.

Taritino (below), trained at Newmarket by Amy Murphy, beat a well-regarded Michael Dods-trained juvenile in Pol Roger at Redcar last month. Pol Roger has won twice since then - the second coming at Thirsk today (Friday) - so the form has been well and truly franked. Taritino returns to the track for the Bakers Tailoring EBF Restricted Novice Stakes and can defy a penalty with talented apprentice Stefano Cherchi back in the saddle.

The Celebrating The Life of Russ Parker Fillies’ Restricted Novice Stakes, could also go to Newmarket with Cite D’Or, trained by Harry Eustace and ridden by three-pound claimer Pierre-Louis Jamin, the likely favourite.

However, preference is for Tim Easterby’s Saleet to build on her recent Carlisle victory that followed two promising runs at Thirsk. The ever-reliable David Allan is in the plate.

Hurstwood (below), trained in North Yorkshire by Peter Niven, improved to land a gamble at the last Redcar meeting and will be fancied to follow up under Paul Mulrennan in the penultimate Every Race Live On Racing TV Handicap (Division 1).

However, Dreamcasing caught the eye when badly hampered at Catterick last time, having been second of 20 at Thirsk before that. Grant Tuer’s gelding has Sam James back in the saddle and looks ready to break his duck.

Isle of Dreams, trained at Malton by Declan Carroll, has already won three times under five-pound claimer Zak Wheatley this season, and the filly (below) won with something in hand over the course and distance last month. The combination can defy a four-pound rise in the last race on the card, the Every Race Live On Racing TV Handicap.
