Hayley Turner reveals how she missed Redcar winner amid flood rescue
22/10/23

JOCKEY Hayley Turner has revealed the dramatic circumstances that led to her missing an easy winning ride at Redcar.

It transpires that Hayley was under water instead of under starters orders!

The star jockey (pictured on a previous trip to Redcar) had been due to ride Run Zarak Run in the Every Race Live On Racing TV Novice Stakes amid Storm Babet on Friday afternoon.

However, the filly, trained at Newmarket by Harry Eustace, was ridden by PJ McDonald instead when the bad weather prevented Hayley from making it to the North-East track.

Full details behind the jockey change hadn’t been known until Hayley appeared on ITV Racing on Champions Day, on Saturday, and told the story.

She explained: “Basically my car is floating down the Great North Road somewhere on my way to Redcar.

“I had to call 999 and get the fireman to come and rescue me – I actually got a fireman’s lift out of my car window.

“The horse then won about 15 lengths so a very frustrating day. I’m car-less and win-less as well!”

PJ McDonald (pictured below on Run Zarak Run) said he’d been “very lucky” to get the winning ride because it had been a bad day up to then.”

Actually, not that it will be any consolation to Hayley, the horse only won by 11 lengths!
