Teddy hits them for six at Redcar
01/11/22

GIVE It Some Teddy underlined his claims to be one of the best Redcar specialists in recent times when winning his sixth race at the course today.

The admirable eight-year-old gelding, trained at Malton by Tim Easterby and ridden by Ben Robinson, was winning for the first time in 11 runs this season when landing the Weatherbys Stallion Book Handicap.

Easterby said: “He loves the track and he loves that heavy ground. He’s been a wonderful horse to train.”

The trainer confirmed the gelding will stay in training as a nine-year-old and he’ll no doubt be back to try to add to his tally at Redcar.

Easterby made it a double in Redcar’s final race of 2022 when another course winner, Parys Mountain, outbattled Little Jo in the Thanks And See You Next Season Apprentice Handicap.

The victory made it 10 wins for Easterby this season, drawing level with fellow North Yorkshire trainer David O’Meara.

Parys Mountain will have a special place in the heart of 7lbs claimer Brandon Wilkie because he gave him his first winner at Catterick in May, and has now given him win number five.

Easterby said: “Brandon did well. Parys Mountain’s been a bit unlucky once or twice but he’s another grand old horse.”

The scheduled eight-race card was reduced to six due to standing water on the round course, and it got off to a good start for another successful northern trainer, Michael Dods.

The Denton handler saddled co-favourite The King’s Men in the opening Racingtv.com/freetrial EBF Novice Stakes (Division One) but it was the stable’s less fancied Phoenix Fire who relished the testing conditions to win by six-and-a-half lengths under Phil Dennis.

Dods, who trains the winner for wife Carole, said: “We weren’t expecting that, but he loved the heavy ground whereas The King’s Men hated it. Phoenix Fire’s a grand little horse – I’ll have a think, but we might put him away now.”

Leyburn trainer Karl Burke has high hopes of Overrule after the 100,000 guineas New Bay purchase as a yearling handled the ground well for an all-the-way win in the Racingtv.com/freetrial EBF Novice Stakes (Div II) in the hands of Danny Tudhope.

Burke said: “He did it well and learned a lot from his first run at Doncaster. Most New Bays handle cut in the ground, so I was confident he’d go through it. We’ll put him away now and he’s a nice horse for next year.”

Saffie Osborne has had a cracking season in the saddle and she recorded her 43rd winner of the season when Newmarket raider Cantora, trained by George Boughey, overhauled Karl Burke's Edmund Ironside to land the Thank You Adele Nursery Handicap.

The Time Test filly was defying a penalty after winning an 11-runner Leicester nursery last time.

The first-time visor did the trick as Bashful, ridden by Andrew Mullen, held off Freddy Robinson to land the Get Daily Horse Tips At Indicationracing.com Selling Stakes. There was no bid at the auction so he headed back to the Iain Jardine yard in the Scottish borders.
