Time to dream in the race to be Yorkshire’s Wonder Horse
13/09/22

IT Just Takes Time took the lead in the race to win a £100,000 prize for being the ‘Yorkshire Wonder Horse’ by winning Redcar’s feature race today.

The four-year-old, trained in North Yorkshire by Mark Walford and ridden by Jack Garritty, was always doing enough in defiance of a 5lbs penalty to land the Racing TV Profits Returned To Racing Handicap (see main picture).

That means the gelding (also pictured below) has now won at Redcar, Beverley, York and Thirsk this season, having also been second at Doncaster.

The £100,000 bonus is up for grabs for the first horse to win at all nine Go Racing In Yorkshire tracks by the end of 2023 – so It Just Takes Time now has Pontefract, Ripon, Catterick, Wetherby, and Doncaster go.

“We thought if we could win at five courses by the end of this season and then try for the other four next season, we’d have a chance,” said the Sheriff Hutton trainer.

“He’s improving all the time. He struggled over shorter trips early in the season, but the conditions were right for him today. He’s been wonderful for us.”

The four-year-old, owned by Go Alfresco Racing Partners, is next due to run at Pontefract on September 22.

Training honours at Redcar went to County Durham handler Michael Dods, who followed up his double at Thirsk on Monday with another brace and is in fine form.

The first leg of Dods’ Redcar double came in the opening Racing TV Club Day Apprentice Handicap when Bold Territories (pictured below) fought like a tiger under a fine ride by Mark Winn to land a hat-trick of wins.

The four-year-old gelding – owned by brothers Stuart, Paul, and Nigel Taylor-Garthwaite, of Taylor’s Butchers, in Darlington – had previously won on the all-weather at Newcastle and Wolverhampton.

Dods said: “We’re delighted with him because he had a few problems last year and had a wind operation. He’s done well on the all-weather and this was a question of seeing how he handled the turf.

“The young lad gave him a very good ride and, hopefully, there’s more to come. He likes softer underfoot conditions, so there should be more races for him.”

Stuart Taylor-Garthwaite said: “Our grandfather, Jimmy Taylor, loved his horses so it’s nice to maintain the family traditions. It’s also great for the business and to win three on the bounce is fantastic.”

The Dods’ double was sealed when Proclivity (pictured below) took the Every Race Live On Racing TV Novice Stakes by the scruff of the neck from the start under Connor Beasley.

The tough filly was running for the second consecutive day, having been second at Thirsk yesterday.

Dods said: “She got taken on at Thirsk and they went a bit hard up front but she came out of the race well, so we decided to come here while there’s the juice in the ground that she needs.

“She’s shown a great attitude and there should be more races for her before the end of the year.”

The horse is owned and bred by Simon Chappell, who stands his mares with Kate Sigsworth at West Moor Stud, near Thirsk.

Jockey honours went to Kevin Stott, who rode a quick-fire double on Belsito for North Yorkshire trainer Kevin Ryan and Hello Deira for Lambourn-based Owen Burrows.

Belsito (pictured below) dug deep to win the Redcar Racecourse Celebrates National Racehorse Week Restricted Novice Stakes for the Hambleton Racing syndicate.

His trainer said: “He’s a big, unfurnished horse who will improve a lot from two to three, so everything this year is a bonus.”

Hello Deira (pictured below) got up on the line in a four-horse blanket finish to win the Market Cross Jewellers Nursery Handicap for Lambourn trainer Owen Burrows.

There was a great training performance by Middleham father and son partnership Charlie and Mark Johnston when Pillar of Hope (pictured below) returned from 17 months off the track to score decisively in the Join Racing TV Today Handicap under Jason Hart.

The step up in trip paid dividends as the grey City Vaults (pictured below), trained at Upper Helmsley by David O’Meara and ridden by Danny Tudhope cruised home as one of the easiest winners of Redcar’s season in the Watch Race Replays On Racingtv.com Handicap.

A two-minute silence in tribute to The Queen was held before the first race and was impeccably observed before warm applause rang out around the parade ring.
