Buoyant Boughey has a strong case for success at Redcar
18/06/26

NEWMARKET trainer George Boughey is the man of the moment after his unbeaten colt Bow Echo landed an epic win in the St James Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot this week.

And he looks to be the man to follow in much calmer waters as Redcar serves up a Friday taster ahead of Saturday’s Ladies’ Day feast.

Boughey sends two runners north, both ridden by Pat Cosgrave, starting with Case Study in the Free Racing TV At racingtv.com/freetrial Handicap.

The three-year-old filly was only headed inside the last 110 yards when second at Lingfield last time out and looks primed to go one better as she drops back from a mile to seven furlongs.

Boughey’s other charge is Classic Encounter in the Marske Fabrications & Engineering Handicap. The son of Shamardal clearly relishes Redcar, having won twice at the seaside track, including at the end of May.

However, Simon and Ed Crisford’s Fiery Damsel may prove too hot to handle if back to the form she showed last year with back-to-back wins at Kempton and Southwell. This is her turf debut and first run since October, so the market should be a good guide to her chances.

The Crisfords may also have the answer to the Try Racing For Free Now Novice Stakes with Raggaas, a 200,000 guineas yearling by St Mark’s Basilica. The gelding was a promising fourth of 11 at Wolverhampton on his debut and should build on that in the hands of Oisin Orr.

Room Fourteen, trained at Newmarket by James Fanshawe, is in good heart, having won at Yarmouth in April and then finishing a solid second at Ascot last time despite being denied a clear run. She has the strong assistance of Callum Rodriguez in the Start Your Racing Free Trial Handicap and shouldn’t be far away.

Fanshawe and Rodriguez also team up with Argy Bhaji in the Come Racing On Ladies Day Tomorrow Maiden Handicap. The gelding has been runner-up on all four starts this season and deserves to get his head in front.

County Durham trainer Michael Dods has his string in good form and has strong claims with Mecca’s Symphony in the opening In Memory of Peter and Shirley Fryett Handicap.

Owner David Metcalfe has had to be patient with his filly but she showed much improved form over the course and distance last time out when a 33-1 second to Julie Camacho’s Mayo County.

The pair are up against each other again, but Mecca’s Symphony should be closer with a fair swing in the weights.
