Burke aims to keep up life in the fast Lane at Redcar
31/07/23

FRESH from a Group 3 success on the French coast at the weekend, Karl Burke makes the shorter trip to the English seaside on Wednesday and can land the feature race at Redcar.

The Middleham trainer continued his fine form when two-year-old Elite Status won the prestigious Prix de Cabourg, at Deauville, on Sunday.

And, closer to home, Burke is a leading fancy to keep up the momentum with Liberty Lane in the Host & Stay Straight-Mile Series Handicap on Redcar’s seven-race midweek card.

An impressive debut winner at Nottingham as a two-year-old, the son of Teofilo has been running at a decent level this season, including a tilt at the Golden Gate Stakes at Royal Ascot, before being suited by the drop back to a mile when fourth of 12 in a Class 2 handicap at Newmarket last time.

If he learns to settle better, he should make a bold show this time with Sam James in the saddle. They may have most to fear from David O’Meara’s Pisanello, who was a neck second in last year’s Straight-Mile Series final at Redcar, and landed a Hamilton handicap on soft going on his last outing.

The opening race – the Best Flat Races Live On Racing TV British EBF Novice Stakes (Division One) – could also go to Middleham in the form of Ed Bethell’s Angel of England. The Harry Angel colt shaped well when a staying on second to a previous winner at Thirsk last time and can go one better under Callum Rodriguez.

Richard Fahey’s Salamanca Lad was a real eye-catcher on his debut at York in May, looking outpaced until flying late on to snatch fourth. He should be better equipped in the Best Flat Races Live On Racing TV British EBF Novice Stakes (Division Two) with Jack Garritty again in the saddle.

Nibras Angel, another sired by Harry Angel, could be the answer to the Watch Racing TV In Stunning HD Fillies’ Novice Stakes. The filly, trained at Newmarket by Ismail Mohammed, was an impressive winner on her debut at Lingfield in July and should be hard to beat in the hands of Callum Rodriguez.

Another Newmarket raider, Sir Mark Prescott’s Tiffany, goes for a four-timer in the Every Race Live On Racing TV Handicap, having won at Wolverhampton, Windsor and Newcastle in the last month.  In the midst of the winning sequence, the Farhh filly was involved in a Wolverhampton race that was voided after Dane O’Neill was injured in a nasty fall. The much-travelled Luke Morris comes up for the ride.

Rainbow Rain, trained at Spennymoor by Tracy Waggott, put up a career-best performance to win at Thirsk last time out and could defy a 4lbs penalty in the Visit racingtv.com Handicap with the strong assistance of Connor Beasley, who is riding better than ever. Ruth Carr’s recent Catterick scorer Mutanaaseq looks the principal danger.

The final race is the AJA Novice Flat Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap. Ey Up Its Jazz, trained at Malton by Tony Coyle, has been in good heart this season, winning twice at Leicester and Thirsk, and staying on well to be a close second over seven furlongs on heavy ground at Beverley last time. The step up to a mile and give in the ground should suit.

Matt Brown, who won the Amateur Jockeys’ Cambridgeshire at Newmarket last autumn on Craig Lidster’s The Menstone Gem, looks to have another winning chance.
