Connor and Callum shine with doubles at Redcar
19/06/26

CONNOR Beasley and Callum Rodriguez showed why they are two of the most in-demand northern jockeys with doubles at Redcar today.

Beasley scored on City of Poets for Newmarket trainer James Tate and followed up in the next race on smart newcomer Shoof Baeed for Middleham’s Charlie Johnston.

Rodriguez struck with a quick-fire double for Newmarket trainer James Fanshawe in the last two races on Room Fourteen and Argy Bhaji.

In the finish of the day, City of Poets, Classic Encounter and Redcar specialist Double Parked flashed past the post together in the Marske Fabrications and Engineering Handicap.

The photograph showed that Fanshawe’s chestnut colt had won by a short-head from Classic Encounter, with Double Parked a further short-head back in third.

Beasley said: "He got into a lovely rhythm with a big stride, and the best horse got his head in front on the line. The trainer was very hopeful when I spoke to him this morning."

There was a promising debut from Shoof Baeed to hold off 1-3 favourite New Poetic in the Try Racing TV For Free Now Novice Stakes.

Assistant trainer Jock Bennett said the Sea The Stars colt was due to go to the July sales but there may now be a change of plan.

"We may have to have a rethink after that. His work at home has been encouraging, so it wasn't a total surprise, but it looked a hot race on paper. He was game from the front," said Bennett.

Rodriguez kicked off his double with a supremely confident ride as Room Fourteen swooped late to grab The Start Your Racing TV Free Trial Handicap.

"I was always confident – she cruised into the race and got into top gear just before the finish," said the winning rider.

The double came half an hour later when Argy Bhaji made light work of the concluding Come Racing On Ladies’ Day Tomorrow Maiden Handicap.

"A fast pace is the key for him and that was a very good performance," reported Rodriguez.

Thirsk trainer Geoff Harker had the honesty of jockey Sam James to thank for the victory of Travis in the opening In Memory of Peter and Shirley Fryett Handicap.

The horse disappointed badly on his last two runs under James and the jockey told Harker to try a new rider. The advice paid off, with Travis bolting up at 20-1 under claimer William Pyle.

Harker said: "He's been in good heart at home, and I couldn't work out why he was running so badly. Sam just said he didn't get on with the horse and to try someone else. Fair play to Sam – he's been a huge help."

The gelding was winning in the colours of the Tykemeout Syndicate, from Last of the Summer Wine country in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire.

Syndicate spokesman Adam Thompson said: "We bought the horse out of the George Boughey yard and Sam's advice was to try a new rider. We normally like to use David Allan but he's at Ascot, so we got William who's given him a great ride."

The far rail proved decisive again in the Free Racing TV At racingtv.com/freetrial Handicap when Only Dream Big – trained at Malton by Tim Easterby and ridden by Jason Hart – surged clear from Stall 1 to outgun favourite Hey Havana from Stall 2.

"It makes a massive difference, and Jason gave her a great ride," said trainer's son Thomas.

Hart added: "I was drawn one and always confident."
