Cox is on song for a repeat in Redcar’s richest race
02/10/25

LAMBOURN trainer Clive Cox won Redcar’s richest race with Dragon Leader two years ago – and he has another noteworthy contender with Song of The Clyde on Saturday.

The Sergei Prokofiev colt has won two of his five starts so far, including a highly competitive Class 2 race at the York Ebor Festival in August, and he has every chance of landing a cracking renewal of the listed William Hill Two Year Old Trophy under Rob Hornby.

He followed that York win by being a close second in the Weatherbys Scientific 300,000 2-Y-O Stakes at Doncaster last time. Aidan O’Brien’s Brussels was fourth that day and he’s since been second in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket, beaten three-quarters of a length by Wise Approach.

Song of the Clyde faces plenty of competition at Redcar, including Kevin Ryan’s filly, Isle of Fernandez, who was a good third in a Group 3 at Ayr last time.

Hollywood Treasure, trained at Newmarket by Kevin Philippart De Foy, also has strong claims, having won her first two outings before being sent to Longchamp for a Group 3, finishing seventh.

Andrew Balding is having a great season and his Mystical Eye shouldn’t be overlooked. The colt, running in the famous Jeff Smith colours, was a real eyecatcher on his debut at Kempton, finishing strongly despite running green.

Redcar’s second listed contest on an eight-race card is the Racing TV EBF Stallions Guisborough Stakes and Kevin Ryan’s Volterra looks to be the pick on form.

This time last year, Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum’s colt was beating some good horses in winning the Bet MGM Challenge Cup (Heritage Handicap) at Ascot.

Lightly raced this season, he was beaten only a head by Owen Burrows’ Remmooz in listed company at Newbury last time, and looks poised to go one better under Shane Gray.

The other highlight on the card is the Marske Fabrications & Engineering Straight-Mile Series Final Handicap, and Malton maestro Tim Easterby has five entries. Stable jockey David Allan rides Double Parked, who has developed into a Redcar specialist, winning three times at the seaside track this season.

Racing gets underway at 13.36pm with the Racing TV EBF Stallions Novice Stakes. Pandemonium, trained at Newmarket by Simon and Ed Crisford, was an impressive winner on his debut at Yarmouth last month, and will be hard to beat with Oisin Orr taking the ride.

That said, it is always well worth noting signs of market confidence in Karl Burke’s newcomers and the Leyburn trainer has Skiathos making his debut. Victory would be poignant because he’s a son of leading sire Wootton Bassett, who died suddenly recently, aged 17.

The Watch Racing Live On Racing TV Handicap (Division 1) is a tricky affair, but the vote goes to Mighty Quiet who makes the long journey from Harry Charlton’s Wiltshire yard. The four-year-old filly stayed on well to win at Windsor last time, and Millie Wonnacott claims a useful five pounds.

Division 2 is no easier but three-pound claimer William Pyle is having an excellent season and there’ll be plenty of assistance in the saddle for Spartan Times, trained in Staffordshire by Jennie Candlish.

The gelding has won four times in a busy 2025 campaign and was a decent third in a challenge handicap for jump jockeys at Chester last time.

Division Day was a winner for Malton trainer Brian Ellison at Redcar’s September 16 meeting and followed up at Southwell. He’s on a hat-trick in the Market Cross Jewellers Handicap, with star apprentice Warren Fentiman taking off a valuable five pounds.

The finale is the Watch Race Replays On racingtv.com Handicap, which features two of the country’s most popular veteran handicappers in the form of Michael Dods’ Dakota Gold and Tim Easterby’s Copper Knight.

A win for either would be popular but preference is for the 11-year-old Dakota Gold. He was given a rousing reception when he won at Redcar in May 2024, and showed there’s still plenty in the tank when a game winner at Ripon, off a mark of 85, in April.

He’s down to 81 for this five furlong contest and he could take some catching under regular partner, Connor Beasley.
