Doom dispels the gloom with emphatic Redcar win
27/09/23

DOOM was in the spotlight for the right reasons as she put the memory of a difficult afternoon at Ripon firmly behind her to run out a dominant winner of Redcar’s racingtv.com/freetrial Maiden Stakes.

Earlier this month, the William Haggas-trained three-year-old became one of the shortest-priced losers in British racing history when she was turned over at odds of 1-25 in a two-horse race at Ripon.

However, with the punters keeping faith as she was sent off at odds-on again, Doom could be identified as the winner a long way out over Redcar’s seven furlongs.

Jockey Cieren Fallon said: “I’m very happy with her. She jumped out well and travelled into the race really nicely. They went a nice gallop, and she’s got a lovely big stride. If anything, she maybe got a little bit unbalanced when I switched her out, but it didn’t take her long to get back on an even keel. In the end, she ran out a good winner.”

Owner Frank Gillespie, trainer David O’Meara, and jockey David Nolan celebrated a double as Indivar landed the opening race of the afternoon, the Weatherbys Stallion Book Nursery Handicap Stakes, and Kalganov triumphed in the final race of the day, the Watch Racing TV Free For 31 Days Handicap Stakes.

Indivar had to dig deep to beat joint-favourite Be Here Now, while Kalganov was a more comfortable winner as he surged clear on the inside rail.

Gillespie said: “It’s been quite a while since I’ve had a day like this, but it’s made it worth the wait. They both won well, and to be honest, I fancied them both coming to the course this morning. They both got a lovely ride from David.”

Owner and breeder Deborah O’Brien had a birthday to remember as Amayretto won the Start Your Racing TV Free Trial Now Nursery Handicap Stakes in cosy fashion.

O’Brien, who was at Redcar representing owners Lovely Bubbly Racing, bred Amayretto, and chose to spend her birthday watching the two-year-old filly in action.

She said: “She finished second at Newcastle just over a week ago, and as soon as that race finished, we nominated this race for her because we knew she’d relish the mile. I knew it was going to be my birthday, so it’s nice to be able to celebrate with a win.”

Involvement displayed an impressive turn of pace to run out an eye-catching winner of the British EBF Supports Racing To School Future Stayers Maiden Stakes.

The two-year-old, trained by Newmarket-based Simon and Ed Crisford, was making his racecourse debut, but showed no sign of greenness as he picked up smartly in the hands of Ben Curtis.

Pillar Of Hope got back to winning ways as he claimed a dominant success in the Weatherbys Digital Solutions Handicap Stakes.

Trained at Middleham by Charlie Johnston, the five-year-old picked up nicely in the hands of Jason Hart and was going away impressively by the time he crossed the line three-and-a-quarter lengths clear of his closest rival, Havana Party.

Assistant trainer Jock Bennett said: “He won it well. He’s a course and distance winner, and he’s dropped down to a class four, so he definitely had the form in the book.”

JR Cavagin came out top in a thrilling finish to the weatherbysshop.co.uk. Handicap Stakes, edging out Stone of Destiny under the urgings of Graham Lee despite being briefly headed by his sprint rival in the final hundred yards.
