TOP rider James Doyle makes the long journey north to take three rides for Newmarket trainer William Haggas on Redcar’s last fixture of the season on Monday.
‘The Doyler’ (pictured on a previous winning visit to Redcar) looks to be the man to follow with rides on Procyon, Iron Stone Lad, and Rowlf.
Procyon kicks off Doyle’s rides, in the Wathnan Racing colours, in the opening racingtv.com/freetrial British EBF Novice Stakes.
The Mehmas colt should have benefited from the experience of his first run when third of four at Newmarket at the start of the month.
Amo Racing’s Olympiacos, trained at Middleham by Charlie Johnston, could be the main danger after a decent third at Yarmouth on only his second run.
Doyle’s second ride comes on Iron Stone Lad in the EBF Double Trigger Novice Stakes. The Cracksman colt has shown plenty of promise with back-to-back seconds in two runs at Newbury and York.
The race is named in honour of Mark Johnston’s legendary stayer, Double Trigger, who made a spectacular debut at Redcar in 1993. The stable, now headed by Johnston’s son, Charlie, always targets the race and Skylar is the yard’s contender this time.
The son of Australia ran well on his debut when third to Karl Burke’s high-class Burning Up, who was second in the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket before finishing fourth in the Group 1 William Hill Futurity at Doncaster on Saturday.
Andrew Balding has pushed Aiden O’Brien all the way in the trainers’ championship and the Hampshire handler has another likely danger in Caldo – second at Nottingham last time.
Doyle’s third ride is aboard Rowlf, a son of Derby winner Golden Horn, in the Hunt Family Fund Novice Stakes (Sponsored by Betfred). The gelding was fourth of six on his debut at Epsom last month but should have learned from the experience.
However, Nascondino, trained at Lambourn by Daniel and Claire Kubler, will be a tough opponent after progressing to be runner-up to a Haggas horse at Nottingham last time.
The Taylor-Garthwaite brothers, who run the successful Taylor’s butchers business in Darlington, have an interesting afternoon ahead with two runners trained by Michael Dods: Taylormade Lad and Taygar.
Taylormade Lad hasn’t won since August 2025 but has some decent efforts to his credit this year, including when second on his penultimate start at Carlisle. He’s dropped to an eye-catching mark with Sean Kirrane in the saddle for the Market Cross Jewellers Handicap.
Taygar, a previous soft ground Redcar winner, is a quirky sort but she’s been unlucky to finish second five times this year. She’s back for another try in the Thanks and See You Next Season Handicap (Division Two), with Paul Mulrennan tasked with coaxing the best out of her.
Hurstwood, trained at Malton by Peter Niven, has won five times at Redcar, and has another go at the six-timer in the Thanks and See You Next Season Handicap (Division Two).
However, Big Apple Jack, trained by Mick and David Easterby, is running consistently, having followed a Hamilton win last month with good runs at Ripon and Ayr. The popular Joanna Mason takes the ride.
Yafaarr, trained in West Yorkshire by Sam England, has also developed into a Redcar specialist this year, winning three times. He aims to make it four in the Jumps Look Better On Racing TV Handicap and will have the strong assistance of PJ McDonald.
Richard and Peter Fahey’s Naepoint, who won successive races at Redcar in 2024, looks a big danger off a falling mark, and suggested a return to form when fourth of 14 at Ayr last month.
Kiss Me My Love, trained by Roger Fell, was beaten a short-head when favourite at the last Redcar meeting and has a decent chance of going one better in the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme Saves Lives Selling Handicap, with Kevin Stott retaining the ride.
However, Phoenix of Dreams, trained at Malton by John and Sean Quinn, is clearly in good heart, having won a Class 5 race at Kempton last time. Although he’s been concentrating on the all-weather of late, he has a Redcar win to his name in October 2024 and will receive ample assistance from Jason Hart.
