REDCAR stages its second apprentice-only card on Wednesday as the next generation of jockeys get a day in the spotlight.

The seaside track was approached by the British Horseracing Authority to trial the idea in the north last year and it was so successful that the initiative is being repeated.

The six-race card starts at 14.05pm with the Racing TV Free Trial British Apprentice Handicap and ends at 4.50pm with the Go Racing In Yorkshire Future Stars Apprentice Handicap.

Many of the year’s leading apprentices have booked rides at Redcar, including Jack Callan, who has a commanding lead in the 2026 Apprentice Jockeys Championship.

The son of Group One-winning jockey, Neil Callan, so far has 30 winners from 203 rides in 2026, with a 15% strike rate and amassing £302,671 in total prize money.

His scheduled Redcar rides are: Amorim(George Boughey) 2.05pm; Areti (Oliver Cole) 2.40pm, Harswell Ruby (Roger Fell) 3.15pm, and Homestrait (Brian Ellison) 3.50pm.

Callan’s nearest pursuer in the championship race is Jack Nicholls, with 21 winners, and he has rides in each of the six races, so will be hoping to close the gap.

Other leading young riders in action at Redcar include Conor Whitely, Jake Dickson, Rhys Elliott, and Warren Fentiman, who all feature prominently in the championship table.

Redcar’s apprentice-only day has again been welcomed by the national trade body that supports jockeys.

Adam McNamara, Senior Racing Executive for the Professional Jockeys Association (PJA), said: "The PJA is delighted to support the return of the apprentice card at Redcar.

“These days provide invaluable opportunities for our apprentice members to showcase their talents and build new connections whilst also enabling busier jockeys to enjoy a well-earned day off.

“Last year’s card was a tremendous success, and we expect the same level of competitive racing this year."

Redcar general manager Amy Fair added: “We were proud to lead the way in the north with last year’s apprentice-only meeting and we are thrilled to be asked to repeat the initiative this year. Apprentice jockeys are the future of our sport and it is vital that we give them as much support, encouragement and experience as possible.”
