JOCKEY Rowan Scott was in sparkling form with a quick-fire double on a glorious Ladies’ Day at Redcar.
With Britain soaking up a heatwave, an estimated 7,000 people flocked to the seaside course for the seven-race card.
And it was Scott, who hails from Hawick, in the Scottish Borders, who put on a stylish display with a brace of winners on Billy Bathgate and Naana’s Sparkle.
Billy Bathgate, trained in Hawick by Ewan Whillans, got the better of a duel with Cosmic Soul to land the Market Cross Jewellers Handicap.
The gelding is owned by Tom Cox and Ben Coates, of Byker flooring company Cosy @ Home, and the son of New Approach stayed on strongly to floor the opposition.
Ben said: "I'm shaking! We thought he might win today so it's brilliant."
Scott secured the double on Naana’s Sparkle in the next race, the Racing TV Free Trial Handicap, which provided the best finish of the day.
The winner, trained at Newmarket by Alice Haynes, swooped late to collar favourite Reservardo by a neck, with Tiva a head away in third.
Scott said: "He travelled strongly and got a nice bit of cover. He has a nice turn of foot."
The day opened with an impressive performance by Finegans Rainbow, trained in North Yorkshire by Grant Tuer and ridden by Oliver Stammers. Despite running green, the winner stayed on well in the Barry O’Neill Memorial EBF Restricted Novice Stakes and was eased towards the finish, with Ed Bethell’s Territorial Star a length and a half away in second.
The trainer said: "He's always worked nicely at home and he's only the second two-year-old we've run.
"We always thought quite a bit of him but we're not sure where he goes from here. It'll be six furlongs for now, but he'll be a seven or eight furlong three-year-old. He's a nice horse with a nice future."
Winning owner David Swales, a retired engineer from Wetherby, said: "Grant always said he was a decent horse. We were a bit concerned about the fast ground, but Oli said he handled it well and he'll come on for this."
That was followed by another eye-catching victory on only his second run by Kevin Ryan’s Kinnalargy in the Free Racing TV At racingtv.com/freetrial EBF Novice Stakes.
The son of Havana Grey was brought with a well-timed run by Oisin McSweeney to win going away from the Karl Burke-trained favourite, Jungle Monarch.
Owner Patrick Dunne, a director Sainsbury's, is new to the Ryan yard and owns the horse with wife Sinead.
Patrick said: "It was amazing. It's the first time we've been to Redcar and we've loved it."
Middleham’s Ed Bethell is having another fine season and he produced Azure Angel to win the Start Your Racing TV Free Trial Handicap in the hands of Sam James.
The daughter of Harry Angel had been second at Redcar over six furlongs on her last run and Bethell said the drop back to the minimum trip had suited her.
"In hindsight, I wish she was in the Gosforth Park Cup at Newcastle next week but there'll be other opportunities,” he said.
On a good day for the Scottish Borders, Galashiels trainer Katie Scott was among the winners when Jo Mason brought Baby Rover with a late flourish in the Papas Grandchildren Handicap for Ursa Major Racing.
Katie said: "We always thought she had ability, but she's been quite marish and it's taken a while for it to click. I'm not surprised she's won and, hopefully, we can kick on from here."
The concluding Watch Race Replays At racingtv.com 'Confirmed' Handicap saw previous course winner Eeetee fly home for veteran Malton trainer John Wainwright and jockey Cam Hardie.
John, who has been training 38 years, said: "He clearly likes it here, so we'll see what the handicapper does but coming back here is on the cards."
