Hollie hoping to be poetry in motion on Redcar visit
25/09/23

STAR jockey Hollie Doyle pays another welcome visit to Redcar on Wednesday, fresh from her last gasp win in Saturday’s Ayr Silver Cup on Wobwobwob.

Doyle has two booked rides, on Budding Poet and Jumeira Vision, for the Lambourn stables of Owen Burrows and Archie Watson respectively.

Budding Poet’s form in four races over sprint distances this year has been distinctly uninspiring but the colt did markedly better when stepped up to a mile at Bath last time, despite being hampered. He sticks to a mile for the Start Your Racing TV Free Trial Now Nursery Handicap and, with Doyle’s assistance from the saddle, this could be his opportunity.

Jumeira Vision has only seen the racecourse once, when fifth of sixth over a mile-and-a-quarter at Newcastle back in March, when trained by John and Thady Gosden. The Iffraaj gelding has since switched to Archie Watson and drops back to seven furlongs for the racingtv.com/freetrial Maiden Stakes.

Interestingly, the opponents include the William Haggas-trained Doom, who made a bit of unwanted history at Ripon last time when becoming one of the shortest-priced losing favourites on record – going down in a two-horse race at 1-25. The Dubawi filly aims to make amends with Cieren Fallon booked to ride.

Redcar’s seven-race midweek card gets underway at 2.05pm, with the Weatherbys Stallion Book Nursery Handicap. Michael Dods’ Mecca’s Duchess improved for the step up to six furlongs when second at Thirsk last time and she may be up to going one better under Connor Beasley.

There are some big stables represented in the British EBF Supports Racing To School Future Stayers Maiden Stakes over seven furlongs. With debutantes and unexposed types in the field, the market will be the most reliable guide to signs of confidence, but the William Haggas-trained Highland Spring has the benefit of experience with two creditable runs at Sandown and Newbury.

Pillar of Hope (pictured below), trained at Middleham by Charlie Johnston, was a course and distance winner off a mark of 82 in 2022, and was far from disgraced when fourth behind Oviedo in the Zetland Gold Cup at Redcar off the same mark at the end of May. Down to a mark of 79, he could bounce back under Jason Hart in the Weatherbys Digital Solutions Handicap.

The weatherbysshop.co.uk Handicap was won in cosy fashion by Lotus Rose (pictured below) last year and the filly, trained in North Yorkshire by Roger Fell and Sean Murray, aims for a repeat. She looked to be coming into form when third at Doncaster this month and comes here on a mark only one pound higher than when she won last year. With Jonny Peate claiming a handy three pounds, she looks primed for another bold show.

The last race on the card is the Watch Racing TV Free For 31 Days Handicap and it could go to David O’Meara with Kalganov, ridden by David Nolan. The gelding only just failed to catch Jim Goldie’s Cosa Sara at the Ayr Festival last week and makes a quick reappearance.
