Horse owned by The King aims to write new Royal chapter at Redcar
23/10/22

REDCAR could be in line to mark a new era in its connections with The Royal Family tomorrow when The King has his first runner at the seaside track.

Two-year-old colt Desert Hero, by legendary Derby winner Sea The Stars, lines up in the monarch's famous purple, scarlet and gold colours in the EBF Double Trigger Stakes at 2.30pm.

The late Queen Elizabeth, who was a passionate supporter of racing, had a long association with Redcar, going back to 1968 when her horse Castle Yard won the Zetland Gold Cup. She won the race again 41 years later with My Kingdom of Fife, trained by Sir Michael Stoute.

She had her last winner at Redcar in August 2018 with Humbolt Current (main picture), trained by William Haggas, and it is the Newmarket trainer who sends up Desert Hero tomorrow.

The King recently announced that he would be selling some of the horses he inherited from The Queen, although it was made clear that The Royal Family’s connections with the sport would continue.

Desert Hero, who will be ridden by Cieren Fallon, made a winning start on soft going at Haydock in September and followed up with a third place behind Charlie Appleby’s Silver Knott in the Group 3 Solario Stakes. That's the best form on offer and Desert Hero is likely to be short odds to appreciate this longer distance and win for the second time.

The race is run in honour of the great stayer Double Trigger, who was trained at Middleham by Mark Johnston. The Johnston yard won it last year with Trojan Horse and goes into battle this time with the unraced Trojan Spirit. A market check is well worthwhile given the stable’s affinity with the race.

Redcar’s penultimate meeting of the season gets underway at 1.30pm with the Visit racingtv.com EBF Novice Stakes. Up and coming Middleham trainer Ed Bethell unleashed an exciting two-year-old prospect with Yorkshire at the last Redcar meeting, and his Scott’s Moon looks another promising youngster from the yard. The son of Starspangledbanner showed plenty of promise when fourth of 12 first time out at Haydock last month and will be fancied to follow up in the hands of PJ McDonald.

Malton handler Declan Carroll has been no stranger to the Redcar winner’s enclosure this season and he saddles two likely market leaders in Kelpie Grey and Carvetti in the Market Cross Jewellery Nursery. Preference is for the former who narrowly missed out when dead-heating for second on his last run at Hamilton.

The Watch Racing TV In HD Selling Stakes could also go to Malton with Magna Moralia, trained by John Quinn and ridden by Ben Robinson. The gelding won off a mark of 77 when winning a Pontefract Class 5 handicap on soft back in April and looks primed to return to winning ways.

Star rider James Doyle is a welcome visitor to Redcar and he looks to have a good opportunity on progressive three-year-old Awaal, trained at Newmarket by Simon and Ed Crisford, in the Join Racing TV For The Jumps Season Handicap. The son of Lope De Vega was beaten by less than a length by a good horse in James Horton’s Phantom Flight in May following a determined win on the all-weather at Lingfield. Awaal hasn’t been since out since that Haydock run but could welll be on a lenient mark.

David O’Meara’s Pisanello, who was finishing strongly when second to Belhaven in the Racing TV Straight-Mile Series Final at the last Redcar meeting, is the danger with race fitness on his side.

The Crisford-Doyle combination also has a leading chance with Pussycat Eyes in the following Every Race Live On Racing TV Maiden Stakes. The Churchill filly has shown promise in two runs on the all-weather at Kempton and Chelmsford.

However, the Michael Dods’ stable is in fine form at the end of another successful season and Abruzzo Mia (pictured below) could follow-up on his debut second over seven furlongs to the David Simcock-trained Kaif at Redcar in September. The Dods gelding, who was well supported that day, drops to six furlongs and could go one better.

A chance is also taken with the Dods-trained Stallone in division one of the Watch Race Replays At racingtv.com Apprentice Handicap. The gelding hasn’t won since a heavy ground victory at Yarmouth in 2019 but has run enough decent races in defeat to think he has a chance of giving Paige Hopper her first win with conditions in his favour.

Porterinthejungle, trained in Hampshire by Robyn Brisland, had plenty in hand when winning at Windsor a week ago and can make the long journey north pay off in division two, under a capable pilot in Mark Winn.
