CLASSIC-WINNING trainer Joseph O’Brien sends his first runner to Redcar on Monday and looks to have a solid chance of making the trip worthwhile.
The son of legendary Aidan O’Brien won the 2012 Two Thousand Guineas, Epsom Derby and Irish Derby on Camelot before turning his attention to training.
Joseph’s winners since joining the training ranks have included two Melbourne Cups with Rekindling and Twilight Payment in 2017 and 2020 respectively.
And his search for winners at all levels has now reached the friendly North East seaside track with Eighteenth Smiles running in the opening racingtv.com EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes.
Cieren Fallon has been booked for the ride on the colt who was fifth of 10 on his debut at Cork at the start of this month.
He looks to have Kevin Ryan’s Kodiak Breeze to beat. The Kodi Bear gelding was a promising second behind Michael Dods’ well regarded Arapaho Gold on his debut at Thirsk and should provide stiff competition for the Irish raider.
The market will be the best guide to the following Join Racing TV Now Maiden Stakes with only one of the seven runners having racecourse experience. Hicko’s Lad, trained by Mick and David Easterby was last of eight at Thirsk on his first run, so the winner is likely to come from the newcomers.
Karl Burke has a powerful stable of two-year-olds, so punters will be sweet on the chances of Revels, a chestnut son of Lope De Vega.
We’ve Got This gave the Graham Lee Racing Club an emotional first winner at Redcar last June and the filly, trained by Ivan Furtado, is reunited with winning jockey Jason Hart in the Marske Fabrication & Engineering Straight Mile Handicap.
It would be another popular win if she can score again in the colours of the club supporting the popular former Grand National-winning jockey.
Fanciulla Del West, owned by musical legend Andrew Llloyd Webber, makes the long trip from Ed Walker’s Lambourn yard for the 100% Racing TV Profits Returned To Racing Fillies’ Handicap and is the only booked ride for George Downing.
The filly, named after a Puccini opera, has run consistently in three outings so far, culminating in a second last time out at Yarmouth, albeit beaten 10 lengths by a long odds-on shot trained by the Gosdens.
There’s unlikely to be anything of that calibre in the field at Redcar, so Lord Lloyd Webber’s charge could hit the right note with punters.
Rebecca Menzies’ One Of Our Own was an impressive winner under Cieren Fallon at the last Redcar meeting and aims to follow up in the Watch Racing TV In Stunning HD Handicap. This time Kaiya Fraser’s in the saddle as the mare aims to defy a penalty.
Michael Dods has a strong hand in the race with course and distance winner Taygar (Jason Hart) and Lord Abama (Connor Beasley, with both dropping to attractive marks.
The partnership of William Haggas and Cieren Fallon was successful with Song of the Clouds at Redcar on May 7 and they will be well fancied to take the racingtv.com Handicap (Division 1) with Perfect Ruler.
The daughter of Night of Thunder disappointed on her seasonal debut at Thirsk last time but is worth another chance.
Tim Easterby’s Long Shot makes a third consecutive appearance at Redcar in the concluding racingtv.com Handicap (Division 2). His penultimate run when third looks the strongest form on offer and he has the reliable David Allan in the plate.
