It could be Lady’s first as Redcar remembers legendary trainer Sam Hall
15/10/25

REDCAR again honours the memory of one of the track’s most successful trainers when it features the Sam Hall Memorial Handicap on Friday.

Middleham-based Sam, who died in 1977, won the Zetland Gold Cup five times, including the first running of the historic race in 1950 with Near Way.

The latest renewal of the race in his memory is a competitive affair but it could be worth siding with the Roger Fell-trained Boyne Lady who won at Redcar back in May (see picture). The filly was off a mark of 70 that day and has dropped to a dangerous looking 66 with Kevin Stott riding.

This year’s Zetland Gold Cup was won by father and son training partnership, John and Sean Quinn, with Liberty Coach.

And the Malton yard must have high hopes of kicking off Redcar’s eight-race card with the highly-tried and well-bred colt Cape Ashizuri.

The son of St Mark’s Basilica won impressively on his debut at Ayr in July before going to post for the Group 2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster on his second run.

He finished fifth of five high-class runners that day, in a race won by Aidan O’Brien’s Puerto Rico, with last week’s Dewhurst winner Gewan in fourth.

However, Cape Ashizuri is clearly well regarded and is swimming in much calmer waters in the opening Watch Live On Racing TV EBF Novice Stakes at Redcar, with the formidable Jason Hart in the saddle.

Hambleton trainer by Kevin Ryan has two of the leading contenders for the following Join Racing TV Now Nursery in the shape of Regal Dream and Coparisi. Regal Dream shaped well enough when third at Redcar last month and is the pick of stable jockey Tom Eaves.

Third on his debut at Hamilton and second next time out at Catterick, Beyond The Bar, trained at Malton by Tim Easterby, is going the right way and can keep the sequence going under David Allan in the Market Cross Jewellers British EBF Restricted Novice Stakes.

Trainer Tina Jackson loves a winner at her local track and she has solid claims with Missmimi, owned by her partner Howard Thompson, brother of veteran TV presenter Derek Thompson. Missmimi was a very promising second of 13 at Pontefract last time and looks a strong contender under Billy Garritty for the Every Race Live On Racing TV Handicap.

Julie Camacho has been no stranger to the winner’s enclosure at Redcar in recent times and she may have the answer to the Champions Full Gallop Tonight On ITV Handicap (Division 1) with Oscar’s Sister.

The mare was only a short-head away from winning at Redcar on September 24 and can go one better with Dougie Costello in the saddle.

Camacho will also fancy her chances in Division 2, with the ultra-consistent Lumenbourg, running in the battenburg colours of Ursa Major Racing.

The gelding hasn’t been out of the frame in eight runs, including winning at Doncaster in July. He was third last time out at Redcar and it would be no surprise to see him defy top-weight under Ryan Sexton.

The final race is the Watch Racing Replays At racingtv.com Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap. Salaria, trained by Charlie Clover at Newmarket, got off the mark at Pontefract last time and could give Kenny Roussety a memorable first winner.

UPDATE: Cape Ashizuri is now declared as a non-runner
