SUPERSTAR jockey Hollie Doyle made the long journey north worthwhile when teaming up with in-form North-East trainer Rebecca Menzies at Redcar today (Thursday).

Doyle had drawn a blank on her previous three rides – Aclaim To Fame and King Carney for Menzies, and the Andrew Balding-trained Ribal – but showed her class with a typically strong ride on Rajmeister in the Racing TV Club Here Today Handicap.

The Showcasing gelding goes to an online sale next week and Sedgefield-based  Menzies said: “He’s very genuine and I’ll be sad to see him go. Hollie gave him a brilliant ride. We’ve had a lot of luck together and it’s nice to support her when she comes north.”

County Durham trainer Michael Dods made it two wins in a few days when Destined overcame an unfavourable draw to land the Every Race Live On Racing TV Fillies Novice Stakes in convincing style in the hands of Connor Beasley.

Dods said: “Luckily, she pinged the stalls and was able to get across and has shown a really good attitude. I’m delighted because she’ll come on for the run.”

The horse competes in the colours of the Ontoawinner syndicate and there was a poignant postscript to the victory. One of the shareholders, Stuart Hancock, passed away last September, and his share was taken by close friend Carl Franks.

Carl said: "Stu will have been looking down and cheering her on. It makes the win all the more special."

A memorial race is being run for Stuart at Doncaster on May 20, when family and friends will gather to celebrate his life.

Middleham trainer Ed Bethell is having another successful season and his Coverdale impressed when sweeping through under Callum Rodriguez to comfortably take the Racing TV Profits Returned To Racing Handicap.

Ed’s father, James, said: “He's always been one of my favourite horses in the yard – I love his attitude and he's improved from two to three. He holds his head in the right way and wants to win. The step up in trip has helped a lot and he was probably unlucky not to win at Pontefract last year.”

Coverdale’s victory helped make up for the disappointment of Bethell’s odds-on favourite Indiana Be only finishing third to Kentucky Bluegrass in the Join Racing TV Restricted Novice Stakes. The winner is trained at Upper Helmsley by David O’Meara and was ridden by Danny Tudhope.

Concorde, trained at Newmarket by George Boughey, is a horse on the up and won for the third time this season when cosily justifying long odds-on in the SDDE Smith Supporting Middlesbrough FC Foundation Handicap.

It should have been a four-timer for the Sixties Icon gelding, but Pat Cosgrave controversially eased up too soon and got caught on the line at Chelmsford, in an error that cost him a 28-day ban.

This time, Concorde never looked in any real danger in the hands of Ben Curtis, despite only winning by half a length from Marco Botti’s Inspirited in the SDDE Smith Supporting Middlesbrough FC Foundation Handicap.

The gelding, running in the colours of the Craig Lidster Racing Club, had easily won at Catterick eight days ago and the club’s assistant manager John Rush believes he’s still progressing.

“We also have full confidence in William. He rides him out at home and they’re a good partnership. The horse is a real trier so, hopefully, there’s more to come,” he said.

There was an eighth career win for Little Jo as the nine-year-old comfortably landed the Follow @racingtv On Twitter Selling Handicap with 5lbs-claimer Laura Coughlan excelling in the plate.

The winner, trained at Northallerton by Gemma Tutty, attracted a £4,000 bid at the auction.
