HIGH-FLYING jockey Jack Mitchell is enjoying a milestone year and he makes the long trip to Redcar to ride a filly seeking a fifth consecutive win.
Mitchell (pictured on a previous visit to Redcar) secured his breakthrough Group 1 victory when Saddadd, trained at Newmarket by Roger Varian, won the Grosser Preis Von Baden in Germany earlier this month.
He heads to Redcar for Tuesday’s seven-race card to team up again with Varian, who has Supplicate heading the ante-post market for the Market Cross Jewellers Handicap.
The progressive daughter of Ulysses has racked up four wins on the bounce and seeks to defy another six pounds rise in the handicap as she aims for a five-timer.
Mitchell has also picked up spare rides on Viviana, for Charlie Johnston, and Papa Cocktail, for Michael Herrington, elsewhere on the card, but Supplicate is clearly why he’s making the journey north.
The card gets underway at 1.53pm with the racingtv.com Restricted Novice Stakes. Ivan Furtado’s Blake’s Monarch comes into the race on the back of a creditable 10th of 21 in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, so must be highly regarded.
The gelding’s main opponent looks likely to be Karl Burke’s Mugheer, who won by a short-head on his debut at Catterick at the end of August despite running green. He’s sure to have come on for that experience and has Clifford Lee in the saddle.
Burke and Lee also have strong claims in the following Watch RacingTV Free For 31 Days Selling Stakes with Rock Steady Beat, who has shown form at a higher grade, including when third at Redcar in June.
However, it’s a competitive seller and Archie Watson’s Lambourn raider Niewiadoma catches the eye, with Pierre Louis-Jamin riding.
After winning under Hollie Doyle on her debut at Thirsk in April, Niewiadoma has been highly tried, including when down the field in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot, and the Harry’s Half Million By Goffs race at the York Festival.
It’s a big drop from a Royal Ascot Group 2 to a Redcar seller and Watson has a fine strike rate at Redcar.
Worcestershire trainer Ian Williams is double-handed in the Markse Fabrication and Engineering Straight Mile Handicap with Law of Design (Paul Mulrennan) and Just Typical (Jason Hart) heading the ante-post betting.
Law of Design was a good second of 16 in a mile series final at Chepstow last time and looks the most likely of the pair to make the 200-mile trip worthwhile.
Malton trainer Peter Niven was smiling at the last Redcar meeting when Hurstwood made it five career wins at the track. He saddles Sugar Baby in the Start Your RacingTV Free Trial Now Handicap in the same checked colours of the Hard Held Partnership.
Sugar Baby (pictured below) is another who clearly likes Redcar, having won twice at the track in 2025. He won off a mark of 68 last October, is only a pound higher this time, and should have the good ground he needs.
Jason Hart rode John Wainwright’s Startling to victory at Southwell last time out and is reunited with the filly for the Try RacingTV Free Now At racingtv.com/freetrial Handicap. She showed a good, battling attitude that day and could be up to defying a 5lbs penalty.
County Durham trainer Michael Dods has plenty of ammunition in the concluding Watch Racing TV In Stunning HD Handicap, saddling Midnight Lir, Zuffolo, and Golden Havana.
Midnight Lir has dropped steadily down the handicap since winning twice in 2023, while Zuffolo has won at Redcar twice and is on an attractive mark. However, the stable’s number one jockey Connor Beasley rides Golden Havana, who had been runner-up three times in a row before finishing a disappointing fifth of sixth when favourite at Musselburgh last time out.
