Johnston hoping to Trigger happy family memories at Redcar
25/10/25

REDCAR again honours the memory of one of Britain’s greatest stayers on Monday when it stages the latest running of the EBF ‘Double Trigger’ Novice Stakes.

Double Trigger, trained at Middleham by Mark Johnston, won in spectacular fashion on his racecourse debut at Redcar in 1993 before going on to win 12 Group races, including the Stayers’ Triple Crown in 1995.

The Johnston stable has targeted Double Trigger’s race at Redcar since it was added to the calendar, with Trojan Horse – owned, like Double Trigger by Ron Huggins – winning the 2021 renewal (see main picture).

Charlie Johnston has succeeded his record-breaking father, and he will again be hoping to land the nine-furlong contest for two-year-olds again with New Bay Star.

The son of New Bay has run twice so far, finishing sixth at Yarmouth, then third at Bath over a mile last time when staying on.

He should appreciate the extra furlong but has stiff competition, notably from another son of New Bay, the Ralph Beckett-trained Bay of Brilliance.

After a debut fifth at Newbury, the chestnut colt won at Goodwood over a mile and a furlong last month and is ridden by Hector Crouch, making a rare visit to Redcar.

Double Trigger’s race is the third on an eight-race card, which starts at 12.30pm with the Get A Free Trial At racingtv.com/freetrial Fillies’ Novice Stakes.

Only four go to post but it’s still a competitive affair. Crystal Dagger, trained at Lambourn by Ed Walker, ran well at Redcar on her debut when second behind Ralph Beckett’s Circios.

Crystal Dagger was second again at Carlisle next time out but has disappointed on the all-weather at Kempton and Newcastle since then. Connections will be hoping a return to turf at Redcar will produce a revival in form.

Karl Burke’s Skiathos was a solid second on his debut behind 1-5 shot Pandemonium at Redcar on October 4, showing enough promise to suggest he might go one better under Shane Gray in the Racing TV EBF Stallions Novice Stakes.

Dinah Myte makes the long journey from John Gallagher’s Oxfordshire stable for Division One of the Market Cross Jewellers Handicap. A winner at Ffos Las before being third at Brighton, she should be bang in contention under Hector Crouch.

Lunar Jet, trained in Staffordshire by Steph Hollinshead, is a winner at Redcar twice in the past, and the veteran put up an eye-catching performance to be a strong-finishing fifth of 11 at the track earlier this month, despite not having a clear run.

The 11-year-old returns to Redcar for the Division Two of the Market Cross Jewellers Handicap with strong claims under Sean Kirrane.

The famous blue colours of Godolphin will be on display in the Champions Full Gallop On ITV Novice Stakes when Military Cross, trained by John and Thady Gosden and ridden by Rab Havlin, seeks to break his duck after being second in all his three races so far.

A real Redcar specialist goes to post in the Jumps Season Free Trial On RacingTV Handicap in the form of Tim Easterby’s admirable chestnut Cruyff Turn.

The gelding won for the fourth time at Redcar in April and is back to the same handicap mark under Duran Fentiman. The concern is that he was relishing his favoured fast ground over seven furlongs for that last victory, and the softer conditions over a mile on Monday might not suit as well.

Malton trainer Peter Niven enjoyed a double at the last Redcar meeting and he has strong claims with course and distance winner Hurstwood in the Start Your RacingTV Free Trial Now Apprentice Handicap.

The Dark Angel gelding won at Nottingham last time and seeks to defy a penalty under Jack Nicholls.
