Michael Dods maintained his hot streak at Redcar today when Zuffolo bounced back from a disappointing run at Beverley to win in the hands of Callum Rodriguez.

Dods, who trains near Darlington, has now had 13 winners in May and Zuffolo’s victory (main picture) was especially sweet for co-owner Geoff Thompson and wife Jane, who live at Redcar.

Rodriguez was wearing their colours in the Join Racing TV Now Handicap, and it was a dream come true to win at their local track.

The other co-owners are Ian Davison, Roger Saunders, and Alan Drysdale. Ian said: “We’re thrilled. He ran really badly at Beverley, and we put it down to the soft ground, but you always have a niggling doubt until their next run. We’ve always known he was a trier, and he showed a great attitude today.”

Middlesbrough Football Club fan Michael Marsh had the disappointment of his beloved Boro missing out on promotion, but he was celebrating a winner at Redcar.

His two-year-old colt, Arc Shadowfax, trained at Malton by Seb Spencer and ridden by Dale Swift, was a comfortable 5-1 winner of the opening racingtv.com EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes.

Michael, who owns Middlesbrough engineering company, Group-Industrial UK Limited, has five two-year-olds with Spencer and believes this is the best of them.

The Harry Angel colt was fourth of seven in a Thirsk maiden on his debut 30 days ago, but the penny really dropped in his second run.

Michael said: “We always liked him, but you never really know until they’re on the track. We’d like to think there are some nice races for him and we’d like to have a day out at York with him.”

There was a big reception for Hollie Doyle as she returned to the winner's enclosure on debutante Chaturanga, who was an easy winner of division two of the racingtv.com EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes.

Trained by at Lambourn by Archie Watson for Hambleton Racing XLVI, the Invincible Army colt looks a horse with a future.

Doyle said: “I’m really pleased – he’s a lovely big horse with plenty of scope. He’s still a bit raw but travelled beautifully and he’s definitely capable of stepping up in class. There’s more to come.”

Hambleton Racing XLVI syndicate manager Cosmo Charlton added: “That was very impressive. He was always travelling well and showed a good turn of foot when Hollie pressed the button. He went better the further he travelled so he’ll be stepping up in class now.”

Favourite-backers were cheering again in the next race when Milteye, trained in Berkshire by Jack Channon and ridden by Kevin Stott, strode clear in the Pat & Les Holmes Memorial Restricted Maiden. Milteye, third at Goodwood two weeks ago and wearing cheekpieces for the first time, hung across to the far rail but won with authority.

Senesi, trained at Newmarket by Kevin Philippart de Foy and ridden by Daniel Muscutt, showed a good attitude to win the Styled Interior Design Straight Mile Fillies' Handicap.

However, it is worth noting a promising performance from Michael Dods’ Alethiometer, who was a gallant second, giving the winner 15lbs, after a lengthy lay-off.

Drawn 1, Grace Angel and Jason Watson ploughed a loan furrow up the far rail to outpace their rivals in the Watch Racing TV In Stunning HD Handicap.

The Harry Angel filly, trained in Newmarket by Darryll Holland, never looked like relinquishing her lead.

Watson said: "Bagging that rail can make a big difference here and, having ridden a lot for David O’Meara in the north, I’m getting to know the tracks a lot better.

“This filly has a lot of pace and loves to travel into the race for as long as possible. She’s got a high cruising speed and is tough.”

Third at Catterick and second at Musselburgh in his last two runs, Mr Jetman was first past the post in the racingtv.com handicap.

Trained at Northallerton by Grant Tuer, Mr Jetman powered home under Sam James to hold off the determined challenge of Adrian Nicholls’ Thornaby Beauty.

Hector Crouch made his long trip north worthwhile as his only ride of the day, 1-2 favourite Galilaeus, trained in Hampshire by Ralph Beckett, stayed on stoutly to win the final race of the day, the Watch Racing TV On Sky 424 Handicap.
