A kiss for luck as Jo lands a Redcar double
18/05/26

JOCKEY Joanna Mason's love affair with Redcar continued today with a smacker of a double.

Jo, who has enjoyed plenty of success at Redcar, starred at the sun-kissed seaside track on Kiss Me My Love and Glory Hyde, both for North Yorkshire trainer Roger Fell.

Kiss Me My Love won the Marske Fabrication & Engineering Straight Mile Series Qualifier by a nose from Mick Appleby’s Straight A in a thrilling finish.

“She's so gutsy,” said Joanna before planting a kiss on the winner’s nose. "If anything, she travelled too well. It probably wasn't my best ride because I got there a bit too early, but she always pulls out a bit more."

If she got there too early on Kiss Me My Love, Joanna almost left it too late on Glory Hyde, who flew at the finish to deny Michael Dods' free-running Taygar in the Watch Racing TV In Stunning HD Handicap.

Joanna said: "She bunny-hopped out of the stalls and we couldn't go the speed, so I had to bide my time. Coming to the furlong pole, I thought they weren't coming back to me, but she really motored.”

Glory Hyde’s owner David Swales, a retired BT manager from Wetherby, said: "We expected her to run well but I thought she might be sixth 150 yards out, let alone win!"

Redcar racegoers may have seen a potential star in Karl Burke’s Revels, who was described as “an exciting horse for the future” by winning rider Sam James after an impressive debut in the Join Racing TV Now Maiden Stakes.

The son of Lope de Vega, who cost 350,000gns as a yearling, was much too good for Michael Dods’ debutante Don’t Stop Moving.

"I loved him when I rode work on him at home and I really like him,” said the winning jockey. “He probably wasn't 100 per cent ready but I love his attitude. He'll improve a ton for that."

Kodiak Breeze, trained by Kevin Ryan, also looked a smart juvenile when building on a promising debut at Thirsk to land the opening racingtv.com EBF Restricted Maiden, under Shane Gray.

The Kodi Bear gelding is owned by Hambleton Racing and there were lots of happy syndicate members to greet the winner.

Amy Ryan, speaking for the winning stable, said: "He's still a baby and there's improvement to come. That was a nice step forward from his debut when he was second at Thirsk and he's got a great attitude."

Michael Dods' newcomer, Arenite, also showed a good attitude to be a fine second and looks a winner in waiting.

Dods had a good form line coming into the race because his Arapaho Gold had beaten Kodiak Breeze at Thirsk. Both look two-year-olds to follow.

Ammoony, trained at Newmarket by Tom Clover and ridden by Cieren Fallon, comfortably landed the 100% Racing TV Profits Returned To Racing Fillies' Handicap, with Andrew Llloyd Webber's Fanciulla Del West a length away in second.

Cieren said: "I switched her off the fence and she picked up well. In time, she'll get further."

Malton trainer Nigel Tinkler has his horses in good form and the imposing Maximum Velocity was an easy winner of the racingtv.com Handicap (Division One).

“Now we've found the key to him he could improve a few more pounds,” said winning rider Alex Jary.

"He's a big horse with a really big stride, so it was a case of letting him use it. He's a lovely three-year-old going into the rest of the season.”

Irish eyes were smiling after Black Rock Beauty won the concluding racingtv.com Handicap (Division Two) in the hands of Oisin Orr.

The members of the winning 'Fides et Robur' syndicate are old Blackrock College friends of trainer Richard Fahey – and they include Father Ted star Ardal O'Hanlon.

Fides et Robur, meaning Faith and Strength, is the motto of the Dublin college.

Four members of the syndicate flew in to watch the race: Eugene O'Gorman, Cieren Gleeson, Michael Gavigan, and Ardal O'Hanlon's brother, Neale.

It's taken a while for Black Rock Beauty to win, but his owners’ prayers have finally been answered!
