MR Cool looks like a topical tip on the day Redcar goes in search of its Best Dressed Gent.
Saturday’s meeting at the seaside track is billed as Gents’ Evening, when the men are encouraged to dress to impress.
Fantastic prizes are on offer from sponsors Market Cross Jewellers and Bakers Tailoring in the Best Dressed Gent and Best Dressed Couple competitions.
Mr Cool, trained at Middleham by Charlie Johnston and ridden by Connor Beasley, would be a fitting winner of the Market Cross Jewellers Handicap (Division 1).
The Middleham Park Racing gelding has been a model of consistency, winning at Ayr last month before being a creditable third under a penalty at the same track earlier this month.
He will be a leading fancy but there may be better value in siding with Michael Dods’ Taygar, who has been runner-up four times in 2026 and is due a win.
The recent rain will have helped his cause and he’s back down to the mark he was on when winning on soft over the course and distance in November 2024. Lewis Edmunds rode him that day and he’s back in the saddle.
Dods also has a strong hand in the opener, the Every Race Live On Racing TV EBF Restricted, when the County Durham trainer saddles Don’t Stop Moving and Callisterra.
The former was second on his debut at Redcar in May before being sixth of 10 at Ayr on his only other run, while Callisterra was a promising fifth on her debut at Thirsk before being runner-up at Redcar last time. It should be noted that stable jockey Connor Beasley rides Don’t Stop me now.
Bigalo, trained in North Yorkshire by Roger Fell, and ridden by Oisin McSweeney, deserves a break after three seconds in a row, and his chance may come in the Watch Racing TV Now Selling Stakes.
Helmsley trainer David O’Meara looks to have the strongest hand in the Marske Fabrications and Engineering Handicap with Kaleido and Rajapour among the ante-post market leaders.
Rajapour was an easy winner at Redcar on July 19 before taking a fall next time out when hampered at York. He had a confidence-builder at Hamilton at the start of the month when he was fifth of 10 and clearly likes Redcar though he’s nine pounds higher than when he won last month.
Poppeye, trained in North Yorkshire by Grant Tuer, was a solid second of 12 at Redcar last time out, and aims to go one better under Oliver Stammers in the Bakers Tailoring Handicap (Division 1).
Ironically, Yafaarr, the horse that beat Poppeye that day at Redcar, lines up in Bakers Tailoring Handicap (Division 2). The gelding, trained in West Yorkshire by Sam England and ridden by Cian Horgan, clearly likes Redcar because he was also second at the track two runs later.
Bonnie’s Boy was a promising fourth in a big field at York last time out and Richard Fahey’s charge, ridden by the talented 3lbs claimer Warren Fentiman, could be the answer to the Market Cross Jewellers Handicap (Division 2).
As well as having strong contenders in the opener, Michael Dods also has a good chance in the last race, the Ladbrokes ‘Insure Your Acca On Football’ Handicap when he saddles Macedonian.
The Ursa Major Racing gelding put up a much improved performance when second of 13 at Ayr last time and Connor Beasley takes over in the saddle.
