FORMER jockey Gihan Arnolda continued his cracking start to life as Newmarket’s first black trainer by toasting his first Redcar winner today.

Mojito Madness skated up in the opening Racing TV Free Trial EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes under Raw Dawson on his only ride of the day as Redcar joined in the Go Racing In Yorkshire Summer Festival.

That made it five winners from 22 runners in just seven weeks for the rookie trainer, who has 18 horses in his care.

“The start we’ve made has been unbelievable and I thought this horse would win today,” said Arnolda, who recalled having two winners as an apprentice jockey at Redcar.

"I have fond memories of Redcar and it's great to come up and win as a trainer," he said. “The aim is to keep building the number of horses and, hopefully, the winners will keep coming.”

Winning jockey Dawson, who made the long trip north worthwhile, said: "Gihan’s a friend and a great horseman, so it's great to see him doing so well. Mojito Madness has a lovely big stride for a small horse, and we had high hopes today."

Jason Hart and Mark Winn were the stars of the day in the saddle, both riding doubles. Hart scored on Billy Bathgate and Sahm Naif, while Winn matched him with wins on Rajapour and Pisanello for North Yorkshire trainer David O’Meara.

Billy Bathgate, trained by Ewan Whillans at Hawick, was having his first run on turf since last August, and was confidently ridden by Hart to easily land the racingtv.com/freetrial Handicap over a testing one mile and seven furlongs.

"He's a grand horse at his level," said Hart. "He needs to be dropped in and helped along but it's nice to get his head in front."

Hart’s double came when Sahm Naif, trained at Newmarket by James Horton, survived a stewards' enquiry to win the Try Racing TV For Free Now Handicap by a neck from Harswell River.

The Churchill gelding was following up a game victory at Beverley last month.

Rajapour took advantage of a career-low mark to easily land the Sky Bet For The Fans Handicap for the O’Meara-Winn partnership.

The winning jockey said: "We got him from France, and we've been trying to figure him out, but he's won that easily. It was nice to get him on a day when he was trying. The race suited him. He got into a nice rhythm and got a lovely run through."

Pisanello flew close home to catch favourite Finally Escaped in the Start Your Racing TV Free Trial Handicap, with Winn saying: "We knew he’d come good and there's no reason why he shouldn't win a few more."

It was a milestone day for apprentice jockey Jake Dickson, who rode out his 7lbs claim with his 20th winner on Financer, for Tim Easterby, in the Sky Bet Go-Racing-In-Yorkshire Summer Festival Handicap.

"Going down to 5lbs will make it harder but, hopefully, I'll be good enough to keep going, and I'm getting great experience," said Dickson.

Financer, a son of Cracksman, was too strong in the finish to hold off a late challenge from favourite, Be Patient, trained at Middleham by Ed Bethell.

Indefensible, trained at Malton by Ollie Pears and ridden by Harry Russell, landed the seven-furlongs Luke Jobson Restricted Maiden Stakes 24 hours after finishing third over six furlongs at Ripon.

"He ran OK yesterday but you have to keep rolling the dice," said Pears after the gelding lost his maiden tag. “He would have enough ability to win over five furlongs and he's probably been underachieving."

Speaking live on Racing TV, the trainer also used the opportunity to hit out at the abuse he received after the horse’s defeat at Ripon.

"We're trying to win every race, and people don't deserve the abuse they get from people who don't understand. Something needs to be done about it because it affects people's lives," said Pears.
