REDCAR Racecourse has announced an “important partnership” aimed at making it easier for disabled people to come racing with the right support.
The racecourse has joined forces with Nimbus Disability, operators of the Access Card scheme, which makes it possible for racegoers who need the support of an essential companion to book easily in advance.
A free service has been introduced at Redcar to streamline the way disabled people communicate their access needs, helping to identify the obstacles they face, and providing proof of their requirements.
Redcar’s general manager Amy Fair said: “We are committed to being a racecourse that is an accessible environment, so that everyone can enjoy a wonderful day’s racing with the right support in place.
“The important partnership we’ve forged with Nimbus Disability takes that commitment to a new level, making it so much easier and quicker for those with disabilities to bring an essential companion, and to let us know of their requirements in advance.”
Redcar has a Personal Assistant/Companion scheme in place for racegoers requiring support while attending a race meeting.
The new Access Card translates an individual’s disabilities and impairments into easy-to-understand symbols, making it easier for staff to understand at-a-glance what help is needed.
There are more than three million Access Card holders across the UK, with the scheme recognised by more than 2,500 venues and service providers.
An Access Card for use solely at Redcar Racecourse is freely available. However, a physical Access Card recognised by all registered venues nationwide costs just £15 for three years.
