Rowan rows in with a double and has sights on Zetland Gold Cup
30/04/26

FIERCE Fortitude could return to Redcar for the Zetland Gold Cup on May 25 after staying on well to give jockey Rowan Scott a double at the seaside track today.

"He's proven on the course and the Gold Cup would be right up his street," said Scott after the Amo Racing gelding landed the Racing TV Free Trial Handicap by outstaying Ammes.

The winner, trained at Newmarket by Kevin Philippart De Foy, is by sprinting sire Mehmas but got the mile-and-a-quarter trip well after appearing to be not travelling well.

"He was so switched off in the early part of the race but once he got revved up, he finished well. He's definitely going down the staying route," added the winning jockey.

Scott had struck earlier when Egotistical outfought Confide In Me in the Start Racing TV Free Trial Now Fillies' Novice Stakes.

The double made it nine winners in April for the rider and he’s now ridden three winners from five rides for the powerful Roger Varian stable, so it's a partnership worth noting.

Scott said after Egotistical’s victory: "We had a good draw, and she travelled nicely throughout before putting the race to bed quite well. She stuck her neck out and was game to the line."

Ephron looks like a horse to follow after the gelding, trained at Northallerton by Gemma Tutty, came with a late surge in the colours of Middleham Park Racing to win the opening Racing TV Club Day Here Today Handicap.

“He's only going to improve,” said winning jockey Connor Beasley, whose strength in a finish was again on display as the winner stayed on late to beat Karakula Dancer and favourite Ice Cube.

Beasley added: "He was big and raw last year, and still a bit raw today, but the further we went the more the penny dropped. He knew what he was there to do at the business end and he should provide plenty of fun for the syndicate."

Tutty added: "I was really pleased as I thought he'd need a bit more cut in the ground."

Beerwah, trained by John and Sean Quinn at Malton, finished strongly under Jason Hart to outgun Michael Dods’ trailblazing Zuffolo in the Racing TV Profits Returned To Racing Handicap.

"He should pay his way this year," said Quinn senior. "They went quick but we decided not to get involved and it paid off."

Lucky Hero, ridden by David Nolan and trained at Helmsley by David O’Meara, stayed on stoutly to land the Join Racing TV Restricted Novices Stakes, with Whernside and Hungarian separated by a nose in second and third.

"He enjoyed it and is a grand horse. I rode him quite a bit at home last year and thought he'd grown into a nice type. David's horses are in good form," said Nolan.

Lucky Hero was having his first run of 2026, having run consistently as a two-year-old.

King of Berkshire, trained by Andrew Balding, ground it out under PJ McDonald to hold off market rival Sudbury Hill in the Watch Race Replays At racingtv.com Handicap.

"He got into a nice rhythm and wasn't doing a stroke in front. He'll keep improving through the year," said McDonald.
