Saxophonist looks tuned up to land first win at Redcar
21/09/26

THE David O’Meara and Danny Tudhope combination are always to be feared at Redcar and they look ready to hit the right note again at Redcar on Wednesday.

The Helmsley trainer saddles both Saxophonist and Percy’s Daydream in the Weatherbys & Birdie Calendar Handicap.

Percy’s Daydream was a good second over the course and distance two weeks ago and has Kevin Stott in the saddle, but stable jockey Tudhope has chosen Saxophonist who was runner-up at Haydock last time despite being denied a clear run. The gelding is still a maiden but this could be his chance for a first victory.

David Probert is a rare visitor to Redcar but he makes the long trip north for two rides on the seven-race midweek card.

Probert last rode at the seaside track in 2020 but makes a welcome return to ride Lopefernza and Speyside.

Speyside, trained in Cheshire by Hugo Palmer, looks to be his best chance of making the journey worthwhile in the British EBF Supports Racing To School Future Stayers Novice Stakes. The son of Blue Point was down the field in a competitive maiden at the York Ebor Festival but had earlier been a promising third on his debut at Glorious Goodwood.

That said, several powerful yards have newcomers in the field, including Karl Burke’s Golden Souk and the William Haggas-trained The Can Can Man, so the betting is likely to provide a strong guide.

Probert’s other ride comes in the opening Happy Birthday Mark Holton Nursery on the David Loughnane-trained Lopefernza but his three runs have been uninspiring so far.

Son of a Fish, trained in Wiltshire by Richard Hannon, makes more appeal, with Paul Mulrennan in the saddle. He was finishing strongly when third over seven furlongs at Leicester a fortnight ago, and the return to a mile looks made to measure.

After a promising debut when she was second at Ripon, Empress Princess disappointed when an odds-on third over five furlongs at Ripon at the start of the month. Newmarket trainer James Tate sends the No Nay Never filly to Redcar on a recovery mission with an extra furlong to travel in the Weatherbys Stallion Book Nursery and she could bounce back under Connor Beasley.

Pointed, trained in Berkshire by Jack Channon, is another long-traveller to catch the eye in the weatherbysshop.co.uk Novice Stakes after a promising debut when fourth at Kempton. Another by Blue Point, she should be sharper this time with George Bass in the plate.

Malton trainer Nigel Tinkler and three-pound claimer Alex Jary are no strangers to success at Redcar and they team up with the hat-trick seeking Sergeant Mayer in the racingtv/freetrial Handicap. The gelding is up another 4lbs after wins at Nottingham and Leicester but could still be ahead of the handicapper.

The meeting finishes with the AJA Novice Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap. Night Emperor, trained locally by Tina Jackson, was a Redcar winner three runs ago, and should again go well under Tracy Gundry.
