Six of the best as Easterby enjoys a day to remember
20/06/26

TRAINER Tim Easterby enjoyed “a brilliant day” today with six winners – half of them at Redcar.

The Malton maestro scored a hat-trick on Ladies’ Day at Redcar with Furturra, I’m Next, and Hares Bredth.

He also had a double with Argentine Tango and Lope Y Linda at Ayr and completed the half dozen with Leadenhall at Nottingham.

“It’s been a brilliant day – they’ve all run really well,” said Easterby after sealing his treble in the Redcar sunshine before Leadenhall had made his day shine even brighter.

Easterby kicked off his winning spree with Furturra in the Barry O’Neill Memorial EBF Restricted Novice Stakes, the opening heat of Redcar’s seven-race card.

“He’s a super little horse,” said Easterby after the bonny chestnut's easy win under Sean Kirrane.

“He loves fast ground and had a plum draw in stall one, so he had the golden highway,” added the trainer after Furturra had skated away from Michael Dods’ Callisterra in second.

The winner is being aimed at the Doncaster sales race in August.

Easterby’s double came when I'm Next outstayed Paul Midgley’s American Bay in The Start Your Racing TV Free Trial Handicap under Duran Fentiman. The winning rider said: "He's in good form and hasn't run a bad race all year. He got out nicely and travelled really well."

The hat-trick was courtesy of Hares Bredth, who ran on well under Sean Kirrane to beat Ed Bethell’s Oasis Cover in The Tony Greenheld 65th Year Celebrations.

Easterby said of Hares Bredth: "It's been a case of the right race on the right day. He enjoyed the decent ground and likes the track."

A first two-year-old runner of the season for Thirsk trainers David and Nicola Barron turned out to be a winner as debutante Quillan cosily won The racingtv.com/freetrial EBF Novice Stakes at 28-1, beating favourite Undercover Affair by a cheeky neck under a cool Kaiya Fraser ride.

West Yorkshire farmer Digby Atkinson, who owns the Kodi Bear colt with his wife, Anne, said: "We knew he was good – he's been doing everything well at home."

Billingham trainer Chris Grant is best known as a legendary jumps jockey, having finished second twice in the Grand National on Durham Edition in 1988 and 1990.

However, he had a rare flat winner with Stitching Wheel in the Market Cross Jewellers Handicap. "She was bought to go jumping but she was too small, so we thought we'd give this a go,” said Grant after the daughter of Teofilio had won under 5lbs claimer Cian Horgan.

Schrodinger's Cat, trained by Grant Tuer and ridden by Oliver Stammers, was a facile winner of the Watch Racing TV Free For 31 Days Handicap.

The winning jockey said: "He was the best horse in the race and we kept it simple. He's a great front runner and loves his racing. There's a massive track bias and I had the plum draw in stall one."

It was a day of mixed fortunes for jockey Shane Gray. He was unseated when the well-fancied Cosmic Mystery reared after the start of the second race, but ended the meeting on a winner, with Yafaarr winning the Watch Race Replays At racingtv.com Confined Handicap.
