MULTIPLE Group One-winning trainer Clive Cox won Redcar’s richest race three years ago and he’s aiming for the stars again with Satellite of Love in this year’s renewal.
The seaside track stages the listed William Hill Two-Year-Old Trophy on Saturday on an attractive eight-race card also featuring the listed Guisborough Stakes and the Marske Fabrications & Engineering Straight-Mile Series Final.
With an appetising £334,675 of prizemoney on offer, including £183,675 in The Two-Year-Old Trophy, some classy horses are heading to the North East coast.
Lambourn-based Cox won the Two-Year-Old Trophy with favourite Dragon Leader in 2023 and he has the likely favourite again with Satellite of Love.
After wins at Windsor and Newbury, the son of Minzaal was a good fifth behind superstar filly Sun Goddess in the Harry’s Half Million By Goffs race at the York Ebor Festival before finishing runner-up to Night In Vegas in the Weatherbys 300,000 2-Y-O Stakes at Doncaster last month.
Paul Mulrennan takes the ride this time and has an excellent chance of a first win in the valuable Two-Year-Old Trophy.
Karl Burke’s Revels, a debut winner at Redcar in May, and an honourable fourth in the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury last time, looks the main danger.
Mulrennan also has strong claims with Witness Stand in the Guisborough Stakes. The five-year-old, trained by Grand National-winning handler, Dr Richard Newland, has been running in high-class company.
He won the Group 2 Lennox Stakes at Glorious Goodwood last year before finishing second to More Thunder in the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes at Newbury.
He hasn’t won so far this year but was only beaten a head by Ten Bob Tony in a Group 3 at Epsom on Derby Day, and a close third in the Lennox Stakes. His last two runs have seen him finish six and fifth in Group 2 races at Newbury and Doncaster.
On all that evidence, Witness Stand looks to have a compelling case.
The Straight-Mile Series Final is typically competitive. George Boughey’s Classic Encounter won under Pat Cosgrave at Redcar in May and the combination return for the final.
Ed Bethell’s Welbury looked progressive when storming to a seven-length win in a Straight-Mile Series heat in August, before running down the field when taking a keen hold in the Sky bet Mile heritage handicap at the York Festival last time.
The William Haggas-trained Wild Dahlia, third at Redcar in July, is another strong contender, but Welbury could be hard to beat under Oisin Orr if returning to his spectacular course and distance form.
Orr also has a live chance in the opening Racing TV EBF Stallions Novice Stakes for two-year-olds on Richard Fahey’s Charted Course. The 450,000 guineas breeze-up purchase was only beaten just over four lengths in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot before finishing second in a Goodwood maiden in August.
The son of Palace Pier has since had a breathing operation and should be hard to beat if the market points to him being back to full fitness.
The Sam England-trained Yafaarr won going away at Redcar last time out and bids to defy a 4lbs penalty under Shane Gray in Division One of the Prohibition Bar Handicap.
Lady Hornblower was another Redcar winner on her last run, having benefited from a first-time visor. Middleham trainer Jedd O’Keeffe suggested there was more to come, and she lines up with a 4lbs penalty and the visor refitted for Division Two of the Prohibition Bar Handicap. Connor Beasley takes over from Jason Hart in the saddle.
Paul Mulrennan could already have had a good day on the big race favourites by the time in partners Pace Attack for Newmarket veteran trainer Sir Mark Prescott in the Mark Cross Jewellers Handicap.
The grey gelding has been concentrating on the all-weather so far, winning at Southwell on his penultimate start. It will be interesting to see how he fares on the turf this time.
Ruth Carr’s Accrual won well at Ripon last week and goes for a quick follow-up under William Pyle in the concluding Watch Race Replays On racingtv.com Handicap.
