Sweet Redcar double goes down well for Malton trainer Peter Niven
17/10/25

MALTON trainer Peter Niven scored a sweet double at Redcar today when Sugar Baby was followed into the winner’s enclosure by Jam Lass.

Sugar Baby landed the Every Race Live On Racing TV Handicap with three-pound claimer Alec Voikhansky holding off Mark Winn on the David O’Meara-trained Flowstate by a neck.

It was the gelding’s fourth win of the year, including a course and distance victory at Redcar at the start of the season.

The winning trainer said: "He needs good ground and I never thought he'd still be running on turf in October. I had him entered on the all-weather at Newcastle on Tuesday but saw the ground here was going to be good enough. He'll have a break now."

Niven’s double was sealed in the last race, the Watch Racing Replays At racingtv.com Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap when Jam Lass gave Joshua Brown his first win.

After the 25-1 shot had held off favourite Masekela by half a length, Joshua revealed that he had gone into racing after losing his job as an accountant during the Covid pandemic.

Now based with Adrian Keatley, Joshua said: "It's fantastic to get my first winner. She settled nicely and kept finding to the line."

A furlong out, Masekela looked likely to land a hat-trick for another Malton trainer, Tim Easterby, after victories with Beyond The Bar and Flamborough Head.

Beyond The Bar, in the familiar blue and white colours of King Power Racing, never looked in danger under David Allan in the Market Cross Jewellers British EBF Restricted Novice Stakes.

Allan described the winner, a son of Bangkok, as "only small but with a good attitude".

He added: "He jumped well and travelled nicely. We did our own thing out in front and expected him to win today.”

There was a promising run in second by Michael Dods' debutante, Impacting, who looked a horse with potential.

Duran Fentiman was in the saddle for Flamborough Head’s narrow success from the Gemma Tutty-trained Patontheback in the Champions Full Gallop Tonight On ITV Handicap (Division 2).

Owned by retired North Yorkshire builder Dave Lumley, Flamborough Head clearly likes Redcar because he also won at the track in April. He's now destined for the Horses In Training Sale.

Assistant Trainer Tom Easterby said: "He's only three and he's a big fine horse who isn't the finished article yet, so there's more to come."

On a good day for the Easterby family, the father and son combination of Mick and David Easterby landed the Sam Hall Memorial Handicap with Storm Call under Billy Garritty, narrowly denying Monks Dream – trained by Tim.

Garritty said: "The filly jumped well and was always happy. We got the split at the right time, and she did everything right today. The first-time blinkers worked well and hopefully we'll have a bit more fun."

There was an emotional story behind Harswell Angel’s victory under Mark Winn in the opening Watch Live On Racing TV EBF Novice Stakes.

The Roger Fell-trained juvenile just got the better of odds-on favourite Night Mission but drifted left and had to survive a long stewards enquiry before the result was confirmed.

Afterwards, Mike Kirby, racing manager of Harswell Thoroughbreds, revealed that the winner almost died of colic back in February.

"It was really serious and a member of staff stayed with him for three nights to nurse him back to health.

"We like him, but we thought he'd be beaten by the favourite today. He has a lovely long stride and will make a better three-year-old."

The Join Racing TV Now Nursery produced a nice connection to the past for Malton trainer Nigel Tinkler when Bella Delizia beat Kevin Ryan’s Coparisi by a neck under a strong Alex Jary ride.

It was the first winner Tinkler has trained from the progeny of Ubettabelieveit, his precocious winner of the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes.

Tinkler said: "She's been a bit fragile and immature and we'll put her away now. Alex gave her a great ride and she's a nice filly. It's lovely to get a first winner from Ubettabelieveit."

A thrilling finish to the Champions Full Gallop Tonight On ITV Handicap (Division 1) saw Rapido Girl edge out Reginald Charles, with the winner trained by Ivan Furtado and ridden by Jason Hart.

The winning trainer said: "She's a very genuine filly and the step up to seven furlongs helped today. She's on a competitive mark and is very willing. She'll go to the Horses in Training Sale and will win again."
