Tributes to jockey who played a part in Redcar's history
12/11/25

TRIBUTES have been paid to the jockey who rode the winner of the first running of the race that became Redcar's richest race.

Brian Rouse, who rode Osario to victory for Richard Hannon when the Redcar Two Year Old Trophy was run under its original name, the Racecall Gold Trophy, in 1989, has died aged 85.

Brian's biggest success came in the Japan Cup on Stanerra and he rode a classic winner when Quick As Lightning won the1980 1,000 Guineas for John Dunlop. He was also associated with horses such as dual Northumberland Plate winner Tug of War, and Cambridgeshire winner Baronet.

Another claim to fame was that he rode the legendary Desert Orchid in his only flat race, when he was unplaced in the 1985 Sagara Stakes.

The 1989 race at Redcar saw Rouse riding against a glittering line-up of jockeys eager to win the £100,000 first prize. They included Frankie Dettori, Steve Cauthen, Walter Swinburn, Willie Carson, and Pat Eddery. Call To Arms, trained by Clive Brittain, and ridden by Michael Roberts was second.
