Turner returns in bid to add another string to her Beau in Redcar’s richest race
30/09/22

JOCKEY and TV pundit Hayley Turner was a popular winner at the last Redcar meeting – and she can make her presence felt in the richest race of the year at the seaside track tomorrow.

Turner, successful on Kaif at the September 21 meeting (see main picture), teams up with another Newmarket raider, Jumbeau, in the listed William Hill Two Year Old Trophy.

The filly, trained by Tom Clover, hasn’t been seen out since being a highly respectable fifth in the listed Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot, in June. She was three lengths behind Aidan O’Brien’s Little Big Bear that day and he’s gone on to be a seven-length winner of the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh.

Richard Fahey’s progressive filly, Barefoot Angel, and Karl Burke’s Gimcrack third, Cold Case, both have strong claims to keep the big prize in the north. However, Jumbeau should be suited by six furlongs and, although her sharpness has to be taken on trust after her lay-off, she shouldn’t be far away at more appealing odds.

The Two Year Old Trophy is one of two listed races on the Redcar card, with the Racing TV EBF Stallions Guisborough Stakes another nice prize half an hour earlier. Last year’s winner, Azano (pictured below), trained in North Yorkshire by David O’Meara, bids for a repeat but will be hard pushed to overcome likely market leaders I’m A Gambler and Dubai Poet.

The former, trained at Middleham by Charlie and Mark Johnston, is in great form, having won three big handicaps in his last four runs – two at Goodwood and one at Leapardstown. It’s disappointing that Dubai Poet hasn’t won this season but he was third in the Group 3 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot and Roger Varian’s Newmarket raider has to be feared.

The Racing TV Straight-Mile Series Final Handicap is a tricky affair and Michael Dods has a strong hand with the rejuvenated Redcar specialist Diamondonthehill and another course and distance winner A Boy Named Ivy.

However, Tim Easterby’s veteran Give It Some Teddy (pictured below) is another who thrives at Redcar and won this race in both 2018 and 2019 under Duran Fentiman who takes the ride again. The combination were half a length second to Diamondonthehill at Redcar in August and are now nearly a stone better off.

The Easterby camp also has strong claims earlier with Motarajel in the Play Paddys Pick 5 At racingtv.com Handicap (Division 1). The gelding has found trouble in running on his last two outings but hasn’t been far away and this could be his chance.

Division 2 could go to the Michael Dods-trained Berry Edge. After trying longer distances, the four-year-old has found his right trip at a mile-and-a-quarter and has run consistently since being a neck second to Tim Easterby’s Forgivable at the end of July.

Dods, who trains at Denton Hall, near Darlington, will also fancy his chances in the following Market Cross Jewellers Handicap with Billy No Mates, who was second off 10-stones in this race last year. He is lightly raced this year and surprised connections by winning on his seasonal debut at Thirsk before following up with a decent third to Carrigillihy at Pontefract. He reopposes Tim Easterby’s charge on slightly better terms, loves soft ground, and should go close again.

Sir Titus, another Denton Hall inmate, racked up a hat-trick, including a course and distance victory at Redcar, when trained by Bryan Smart last year. He’s disappointed in his three runs since being a close second on his debut for his new yard at Redcar back in May but could bounce back in the Watch RacingTV Free For 31 Days Handicap with his handicap mark falling and the ground easing in his favour.

The eight-race card gets underway at 1.36pm with the racingtv.com/freetrial EBF Stallions Novice Stakes and Ararat, trained at Newmarket by David Simcock, can build on a promising debut second at Yarmouth.
